Microsoft silently preparing your PC for Win 10

I really can't see MS automatically updating 7 users to 10 without the users approval. After the 8 & 8.1 debacle where it met with general disapproval they would really upset a lot of users if they forced a 10 update on those that do not want it.
MS seem to be unaware of what 7 users really want as they continue to provide new OS that are slanted towards touch screen operation.
I want a computer to do what my computer now does & that is database work, spreadsheet work & general web browsing, not something that is somewhere between a mobile phone & a word processor.

I don't know about that. What about Vista and Win 8.0? Nadella has already said some stupid things (saying something is just a step behind doing something), such as telling women they don't need to ask for a raise, just trust the system.

They could force an windows 10 to be download but couldn't be installed without having the person agree to the EULA. If the person doesn't agree to the EULA it won't install.

M$ has been doing things it hasn't done before and has said it will be breaking tradition in the future, such as giving away Win 10 to present users of Win 7 and 8, continuous upgrades instead completely new OSes, etc. Frankly, I wouldn't put it past them to bypass the EULA on Win 10, letting the ones for Win 7 and 8 suffice.

Here's my guess: Win10 is will be free for the first year. Then to get future updates, you will have to subscribe at a nominal cost (or maybe not so nominal!) Or am I being too suspicious?

End Users Licensing Agreement. It's the thing you have to agree to when installing most programs and OSes.

If you put it into a virtual machine (VMware Player), then it is OK. But never replace you workhorse system or make a double boot. There is too much maintenance that is very slow at times to block your system. In virtual, you just minimize the virtual system and go on working.

Ok, I made a triple boot,:roflmao: when I had windows 10 installed.

Windows 7 partition one
Windows 10 partition two
Xubuntu logical partition (dev/sda5) Swap Partition (dev/sda6)

Very unpractical. My W10 virtual machine has been downloading 10049 for 4 hours and now it installs - last time that took 2 hours. So for 6 hours my machine would have been blocked with a double boot. Now I can work, listen to my radio whilst W10 is noodling in the back.
This is where it is sitting since 20 minutes.

Actually, the way I upgraded to 10049 was a pain in the neck and it wouldn't upgrade on install in the virtual machine or on my computer. I did get it to do a clean install. I copied the failed virtual player install.exd to a usb drive. Then converted the install.esd to an iso. Use win dvd/usb tool creator I created a bootable usb flash drive. I did a few other things so it would install correctly. Booted to the usb disk. Did some partition stuff, then installed windows 10. Clean install within 20 to 30 minutes. These are not complete instruction do not follow if you are reading this posting.

Clean install may be fast, but then I would spend 3 days to reinstall and tweak all my stuff. An upgrade is slower, but running in a virtual partition it runs in the background and does not tie me down. And all my stuff is there when it's done. I bet I spend less maintenance time that way.

When I upgraded my W-10 on its own SSD it took about 4 hours.

Can you just think how long it will take when a half of billion people start download Free W-10 when it comes out. We won't be watching a clock but a calender to time it.

I don't think they would force through any Update to WIndows 10 without full informed consent of the Windows 7 user. I realize they've gone from treating 7 like an unwanted stepchild to really wanting to please us in the new OS, and I mean that truly because the feedback reception comparison with Windows 8 (even from MVP's) is like the difference between MYOB and RSVP.

The Ten Team knows that it needs to be as good as if not better than 7 before those customers will accept it, and then there needs to be a way to go back if they can't be made to like it. It will be a real hat trick. When I first heard about Continuum determining how much touch would be offered based on tablet/phone vs. PC, I thought they were on the right track since it gives the user customizing powers. However there is no way they are not going to continue to foist the Apps upon which the company's business plan is largely premised going forward, so the dance that they do introducing users to Apps on the Start Menu needs to be one of the most carefully choreographed in tech history.

I noticed them scribbling notes when I spun the idea at MVP Summit that mini-videos could demonstrate the really useful apps easy adaptation: for mail it could show how easy it is to fill in your nine web accounts to pop them all into a really nice GUI with large reading pane that Updates itself on the Start Menu. That could carry along each Address Book into the People app which starts updating friend's social info as mine did. Then the Weather tile should autodetect location and begin giving forecasts, while the News icon should start updating local/state/national News items with a clear link to Customize yours. Skype should become active once you sign into its account.

I'm still convinced that how well they do this will make the transfer to Apps successful or not, because MS' billion+ desktop users just aren't interested in them otherwise and they'd likely languish on the Start Menu unwanted if not sold cleverly enough.

Of course for those amenable to Social media then things should escalate where their Start menu expands to become a Start screen as necessary. It is the way Windows 8 should have been done in the first place.

All it says on the main page is "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows"

Now who wouldn`t install that update ? LOL
