Microsoft silently preparing your PC for Win 10

Kari do you know what Microsoft is looking for??
If so where can we read about it?

I have no idea about in what extent MS collects the data. In all honesty I do not even care; I am quite sure that they are not interested in reading my mail messages or spying me in any other way. The data they will collect will be used for statistical and development purposes, to make Windows better.

My secrets are safe, if you ever get an email from me you can rest assured Microsoft does not let it circulate among their workers showing what I told you about.

I see it like this: In letting my Windows call home I can feel that although just one user, also my experience counts, that I am a part of the evolution of Windows and in my own small and seemingly insignificant way my bugs and crashes and experiences can someday help a certain bug being fixed. It's like voting; the most stupid reason not to vote is of course "My one vote does not count". Of course it counts, it's exactly the millions of "My one votes" that count, the democracy works the better the more people vote.

The same with Windows. The more users participate, the more information Microsoft gets about the functionality of Windows on various machines, the better Windows we will have.

I wholeheartedly recommend, and this without a trace of sarcasm that if this is too much for you, something you cannot accept, it's time for you to forget the Windows and find yourself another operating system.

That's pretty much my take on the matter as well.

The problem is finding an OS that doesn't behave in exactly the same manner - maybe bare Linux, or DOS would be suitable?
Apple is certainly just as inquisitive as MS - and a lot less transparent in their data-collection, as well as being much more restrictive in the available hardware.

Kari & NoelDP: I follow your thought process for improving the product, but if so, why don't the writeups for these "preparation" updates state what they are doing? Particularly the "diagnostic and tracking" one? If it's so on the up and up, it should be transparent too. What is MS doing to my system to "prepare" it for new versions? What information is MS tracking and reporting about my system? Being vague doesn't instill trust. If and when I'm ready for W10, I'll be happy to install the prep. updates.

^^^ from the same good article, MS's Joe Belfiore saying “We’re going to take that thing that you like, we’re going to give you something that’s familiar, but just works better". If that's the way they -really- think, looking forward to it. My tests of 10 so far are very favorable.

Nah...Microsoft is blinding us deep to hide how much its new OS is beautiful, they're so shy to users!!

Anyway looking forward that one coming along. My main concern is not this new OS but the hardwares i'll have to choose and the money it will cost me to build new one. I far prefer be smokescreened now, feels safer than after buying components.

If I decide to get Win 10 (a mighty big if that keeps getting bigger), I would also prefer to buy it and do a clean install rather than lose a Win 7 license, especially my two Ultimate licenses.

I wish I liked windows 10, but I don't. I tried the previews. I like the W7 classic desktop, if they really considered windows 7 users a priority they would of keep that. No real clean cut answer if windows 10 will become subscription based after 1 or 5 years just a lot of speculation & guesses from tech articles. I pay enough to my internet service provider, I can't pay another fee to Microsoft.

There our some reports that you have to give up your key, once you upgrade to window 10 you won't be able to re-install or go back to windows 7 legally. I really don't how that would work with an oem slp install.

Well one thing is for sure I liked 10 more than 8,
I believe I liked 8.1 more than 10 but still had start8 installed so I doubt I would buy another start10 substitute for win-10 when I already have start8 being unused now :/

So ? it is a dilemma I'll have to make my mind up on eventually being my 8 key is also a upgrade I'll probably give it away and inform them it may throw a raspberry because I have used it on this machine with Brink's Bat file to allow it to be used without a existing os to cover up :/

Now you are getting personal. That's not good. There is no badge in the world that can keep me from expressing a clear and independent view. I am not on the MS payroll. I have been in this business for too long to get fooled by smokescreens.

Windows 10 will be a great OS - for those devices where it works best. But the desktop user will get the short end of the stick and that is deplorable. Most users will not know what they are up to before they are in the middle of it.
