Laptop hard drive space disappearing the longer its on.

So yeah turns out i got another hard drive problem.

This is a 750GB HDD which is pretty much down to its last 10 or so GB... Mainly because of all the videos n such i have on this thing even though i have them on eternal i dont want to risk losing it all...

Anyways i checked disk cleanup and it turns out my temp folder is taing out 11GB and i have no idea why its taking so much of that space. I have taken a screenshot of the most used options that are provided by disc clean up and i wanted to know if its safe to get rid of all the options shown in the screen shot. Would playing some flash or java games in web browser be stored in the temp folder (if they were saved on the hard drive and then opened in a web browser by double clicking the SWF file (Is there a way to see whats in the temp folder to make sure i have everything?)

Hey, not sure about the flash/java games but all options are safe to use. At most you have to re-download such games? If you check windows update cleanup you won't be able to uninstall those updates and there are a few bugged updates that come back to windows update even though you already have them installed.

What antivirus are you using ?

Try WizTree (free) and see if it helps show where space is used.
They have a portable zip available, so no installation needed.

Which updates are bugged? i dont think ive installed windows updates since i got this laptop 3 years ago

Im using MSE,
I know my folder using most folder which contains my downloads, videos, vmware images (i think i deleted those though) I think ive used this program before, but anyways whenever i watch a video or something on the net or even just the computer idling it seems the computer is using the space, i think at one point resetting seemed to restore some of the lost space but sometimes it doesnt either which confuses the hell outta me.

I noticed in the temp folder there was also some opera web browser folders in there i think, if i deleted the temp folder would i lose my tabs bookmarks history etc?

I wouldn't think bookmarks are kept in a temp folder, but i don't use Opera.
If it's open tabs, those might be in temp.

Sorry for the long wait. Yeah the last time I did a windows update on my laptop it took me a day trying to get it back into working order and it really annoyed me. Now I just did a full scan using MSE and it found something called bin.exe or something similar. I don't exactly know what the virus was called though p.block or something. It didn't even save it in history just removed it and when I restarted my laptop to get rid of it did 3gb of my HDD space just disappeared! I think I can regain if it I use system restores "Microsoft antimalware checkpoint" but im sure that it would just bring that back. Im wondering why it took 3gb of my hard drive space with it...

Also with disk cleanup it seems quite a bite are caused by sound files from flash on the web. But most of em seem to be .tmp .json and other extensions I haven't heard of

Every time you go to a website it stores web pages on your hard drive, you have to use disk cleanup every day. If not the data just keeps piling up.

Check mark every box then click delete files.

Who`s to say he`s using Explorer, I use Chrome and clear the history all the time, that stuff builds up.

Alright, some searching show Chrome use 320MB max cache limit as default

At browser address bar: chrome://net-internals/#httpCache
(Down a bit) - Max Cache: 355,544,320

No need to worry

MajorFoley I noticed you don't have SP-1 installed.

SP-1 and many other updates should be installed.
You are going to have to have more room on your "C" partition.
Either move some things to another drive or get a bigger drive.

Windows 7 needs about 10% free space at all times to work properly.

Their are no magic work around for a lack of space problem.

Yeah I tend to use multiple browsers at times cos some websites don't work as well as the others but chrome is also giving me issues at the moment. I mean sometimes when I shut down and turn on the space comes back and sometimes it doesn't. Even when I don't do anything space seems to be disappearing. I think im gonna do another scan with malware bytes to be sure

I need to change that actually my computer does have SP1 ever since I changed hard drives, but this is my laptop not my computer that's giving me the trouble both are running SP1

I also just ran ccleaner and found nvidia install files taking 2gb of my space for some reason guess it might have been GeForce experience.

If IE has a maximum cache of 250MB would watching streams/videos count towards it and delete anything previous or add up?

So guys is there a way to track where the temporary files came from? I would like to find out where a bunch of mp3s and documents files came from before emptying my temporary folder. Because im also losing system restore points now

Yeah im currently using this one windirstat. Apparently in some movies I ripped from my blu ray and rared up they are both taking a whopping 8 gb each. so I got 5 folders full of 16gb each. I'm deleting the movie files while keeping the rars and I pretty much saved myself 40gb there.

But still do you have an answer to my other question? is there a way to track where files stored in temp folder come from?
