Default Audio Device Problem

Hi guys, Windows 7 is having trouble saving my default audio device. Every time I assign it, hit OK, and restart it changes from what I set it to. So every restart I have no sound and I have to manually change the playback defaults and it works fine until I restart again.

This what it looks like when I change it and hit OK

And this is what changes after every restart

Any idea of a cure for this?

Hi Smokozuna,

Welcome to the forum.

After setting it up try right clicking and disabling all the devices that you do not need

I just tried it and unfortunately it did not work. I am open to more suggestions. The communication device that I am trying to get to default is a Magickjack USB phone device and the default device are my desktop speakers if that helps.

Yes, no wonder that it is always going back to the USB speakers.
Where are your normal speakers plugged in?
Have you tried disabling the normal speakers and configuring the USB ones?
Do you get any sound at all from the USB speakers?

Have you tried reinstalling the driver for MagicJack?
If you haven't, unstall, restart, install, restart if required, set as default then restart.

Just tried it but no luck, I think this is a driver issue because with the magicjack plugged in my bios hangs for several seconds which it has never done before.

Yes it looks like a conflict to me as well, I take it that the normal audio drivers are installed and that everything works when the Magic Jack is removed

First, Thank You very much guys for the quick responses, I Really appreciate it!

Yes, when Magicjack is removed everything is swell and when I initally set up Magicjack per these instructions for Windows 7 everything is swell but when I restart all bets are off.

Thirty5tech - Windows 7 Beta

My BIOS hangs for several seconds, my audio devices reassign themselves, some times I get a no audio error.

I guess I should have stated that in XP on the same rig it has been working flawlessly for over a year now. So I don't think I need a powered USB hub.

Makes me wanna order my own MagicJack :)
The 2nd link provided contains an upgrade pack. It might erase all your contact infos though :( Since this has been working for over a year the upgrade might help out as it will contain latest firmware. Might be worth a shot. I also read up on the link you provided. Its a workaround to have MagicJack start up automatically after every restart. Means that they have not been able to sort out the restart issue with MagicJack in Windows 7.

Thanks for the help! I'll try the upgrade pack tonight when my wife gets off the phone. I did install a Vista pack from Magicjack today but maybe this one is different. Magicjack works great until I restart the PC. For laughs I installed Windows 7 and Magicjack on my laptop and I do not have any problems what so ever, even when I restart. BTW it is a work around to have Magicjack work at all on Windows 7, not just the auto start. If you just plug it in it does not work, it says please plug Magicjack into a USB.

You're most welcome ;)
Very interesting indeed...
Since it installed perfectly on your laptop with no issues at all, even the restart, there must be something on your pc that's conflicting with MagicJack. I read somewhere that Nero, Ultra ISO and even Roxio causes conflicts with MagicJack, and that MagicJack is aware of the conflicts and working on it. There might be something there ;)
Personally, I'd go for a reinstall of Windows 7 then MagicJack, then while adding programs, I'd periodically check if MagicJack is affected or not. Working backward might be longer, unless you've already put much work on your Windows 7 OS :(

Please do let us know how this works out as this issue makes me wanna order MagicJack... LOL :)

I did the upgrade you referred me to and it did not make an improvement. I have reformatted and it is not a software issue in this case. I may setup Magicjack on my laptop for 24 hours and see how it performs. When I installed Windows 7 on my laptop it installed without a hitch but when I installed on my PC I had to manually install the Intel SM Bus Controller driver and I think it is somehow related to my problem. If you have anymore ideas I am all ears. I really like Windows 7 and it would be pretty tough for me to go back to XP.

I have done some research and it turns out that Vista has the same problem. When you connect 2 or more audio devices and restart, Windows defaults back to the first USB audio device. Apparently many people have the same complaint I do and there may not be a way to change it. So every restart I have to manually select my default audio device in Windows, hard to believe!

Same here it's a bit annoying, has anyone tried going into properties for their USB device and changed the Exclusive mode setting, not sure what it does but I thought I would see if it makes a difference if you disable it, has anyone else tried it?
