Windows update only offers the option to start downloading windows 10

I'm currently on Windows 7 x64 Pro. For a while now, I've had windows update set to only get the update list and then let me choose when and what to install. Today I opened the program to do a check of new updates and download / install them, but I'm presented only with the option to upgrade to windows 10. The problem is that I don't want to install Windows 10.

The problem is that I've read many at best marginal reports (as well a many scathing condemnations) of user experiences with Win 10 and have decided that I don't want to take the upgrade at this time. That said, it seems MS is intent on preventing me from even attempting to install Win 7 updates because there doesn't appear to be a way to begin installing them. The are available to select for download under the available updates page, but selecting them and pressing 'Ok' simply takes me back to the main screen with only the option to begin my upgrade process and no option to download / install the selected updates.

Is there any way around this, or am I really only presented with the option of running an insecure machine or updating to Win 10?

PS: I have to say for the record that being pressured to make the upgrade to the point that MS seems to be forcing it through without giving me the option to decide for myself doesn't really give me the warm fuzzies about upgrading at all...

Allow me to make several subjective comments. First, although, you have heard many negative comments about Windows 10, I have used the OS, since the release and am more than happy with its performance. I have experience with Windows 98, Vista and Seven and now 10 and 10 is the best by far. Since this is only one man's opinion allow me to discuss the updates.
If you have not already given it a try, hide, the problem update. When you see it just right click and then indicate hide. The effect will be as though it was never there.
If you facts, are as you state, I would agree that you have every right to be unhappy with the circumstances.

I also experience that Windows Update modified screen that seems not to give option to keep installing Win7 updates. As a matter of fact, I also have a number of MS Office updates waiting to be executed, but no obvious way to initiate that. (possibly using the command line, but I really don't want to go there.)

As I put in my post, I removed a couple of KBs known to be linked to "Win10 push", but it didn't resolve the problem.
Please note that I wasn't able to successfully uninstall KB2952664. Is that one causing the trouble for treblesum81 and me - I don't know.
Re your comment that Win10 is not a bad OS. I don't argue that, but some users simply don't want to change something that's not broken. Also, I don't want at the moment to spend time analyzing if all my SW packages would happily work on Win10. They work OK now.

My issue is not the OS itself, which actually looks quite nice, but rather the course MS is taking with certain components of the OS. Because the OS has the most intimate connection between your hardware and you, I strongly feel that the end user should have as much control over it as possible, meaning if I don't want to download an update for any reason, I shouldn't have to, no matter what the purpose of said update. Furthermore, there seem to be lots of privacy concerns about Win10 collecting and returning data back to MS in its default configuration which then requires complicated changes to disable. Again, this is the most integrated software on your computer with the most intimate access to your data... it should not be set by default to send anything back to MS without your explicit permission.

I've looked at removing KBs to try and solve the problem, but I have two issues with this. First, MS can, and probably will just release more KBs, putting me right back at the beginning. And second, I would not put it beyond MS to make future security updates require the KBs in question to be part of their compatibility check.

Microsoft was suppose fix that issue, open windows update and choose check for updates. Then that may fix the issue you are having. You should then be able to install the windows 7 updates without issue.

In a strange mixture of the movie classics "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "1984", Microsoft is deviously trying to force windows10 on all pc's, while at the same time eliminating win7. Some may like the changes in 10, but you can look at all the problems/threats at InfoWorld:

Here are some steps you can take to remove the upgrade automatically downloading:
Remove 3 updates (from control panel, win. upgrades):KB3035583, KB2952664, KB2990214;
Search in "run": "$Windows.~BT", and remove;
And finally the toughest to swallow: change win. upgrade preferences to: "check for updates and let me decide...".

Without these steps (at least until Microsoft makes an "opt-in"), you might have a bad surprise on your pc one morning.
