You can do this during the XP installation. You don't need the 7 DVD to do it.

But he probably want's to do just the formatting part itself with the Win7 DVD just for the fun of it.

But i don't think it's possible, you ether use the XP disc or you just download a distro of Linux that lets you do it.

Then you can just burn the small XP CD onto a DVD. It is kind of a waste of the extra 4GB of space, bbut hey, in the end it works...

I always use ImgBurn and it lets me do things like this. Maybe ImgBurn will work better in this situation for you.

I used ImgBurn to create my install DVD that i just installed Win7 with this morning!

This might not be possible anymore, but in the "old days", you could go to the DOS Shell and just type FORMAT C: Does that still work?

Good idea :P

But then you still need to get DOS. DOS usually comes with a boot cd which usually comes on a cd rom now a days so he is back where he started...

May as well get a decent free partition manager - it's always handy- free one here - installer and boot disc- works great on 7 32 and 64 bit .

Daft not to get it.

Free Download Partition Wizard

While you are at it - get a great free disk/partition imaging program - ( you can run off a boot disc from within that with lots of useful stuff).

http://www.sevenforums.com/software/31019-new-free-backup-app-paragon.html

BTW - you can boot the 7 dvd to system recovery options command prompt and use Diskpart - A 3rd party partition manager is easier and has more options.

Surely just boot from the 7 DVD and then get to the part where it lists the partitions, click Advanced and then Format the right partition? After doing that just cancel the Windows 7 installation. Or am I missing the question?

Why would he mess about with a win98 boot disc - he has the 7 dvd , and 3rd party apps. - free ones are easier to use and offer more options.

Yes, you can do that - or boot 7 dvd to the command prompt and type Diskpart.

If you haven't tried it, open a cmd within windows - just to see what it does , type Diskpart /help.
