Hi
MTL777,
You are more than welcome!
Yes I have SP1 and I installed KB3020369 first before KB3125574 but couldn't finish the install for KB3125574 successfully. I think it may have been because I installed Win 7 on a partition I created with Mini Tool Partition Wizard and I didn't choose the option to format the partition when installing Win 7.
When it comes to re-installing Windows 7 [ALL versions], it is best to keep everything as far as possible Windows based, especially with respect to the formatting of the HDD as Windows will automatically get installed on the
C:\ drive, unless specifically told otherwise.
Maybe because I let Windows Update install automatic updates - I didn't immediately set it to Never and to start up Manual - before I installed KB3020369 and KB3125574.
During a re-installation, when it gets to the screen
Choose a Windows Update option it is always best to click
Ask me later. Once the installation is complete [and before you connect to the Internet] then set the Windows Update to
Never check for updates.
So I installed Win 7 again, and this time I chose the option to format the partition, and I didn't install the Catalyst drivers, and I immediately set Windows Update to Never and to start up Manual before it could download updates. This time it worked! I was finally able to install KB3125574.
After that, I installed KB3172605, and then I set Windows Update to install automatically. So as of now, Windows has automatically installed many more updates.
Here's the thing, though, I still don't have KB3179573 and KB4054518 and there are now security updates installed but I'm not sure if they're the Security Only Updates you mention. And you said I should install KB3179573 and KB4054518 first before I set Windows Update to install automatically. Is it too late now or can I still disable automatic updates and install KB3179573 and KB4054518?
Yes, it is too late now because you have probably installed Windows Updates that have superceded those.
One more question. In the following post, it is suggested to install Security Only Updates up to May 2018.
MS releases SP2 for Windows 7
Is this wrong and I should install Security Only Updates up to December 2017? What exactly is the problem with the Security Only Updates for 2018? And after I finish installing the Security Only Updates up to December 2017 and I set Windows Update to automatic, wouldn't Windows Update automatically install the Security Only Updates for 2018 anyway?
There are different opinions as to whether you install the
Security Only Updates or the latest
Monthly Rollup. You only need to install the
latest Monthly Rollup if you decide to go this route because they are cumulative. There are many posts on this forum that discuss this and if you were to read them then you can decide which is the best option for you! There have been problems [but
not for everyone] in 2018 with both the
Security Only Updates and the
Monthly Rollups as you will see.
Because you had already set the Windows Updates to
Automatic then you have probably got updates that are up to and include June 2018. I have my Windows Updates set to
Never check for updates, as do many members here. The thing is, is that your OS might be perfectly fine. I would suggest that you use it for a few days to see if you run into any problems. If you do, then you could post back here!
You can of course check which updates you have got installed. Obviously the higher the
KB number then the newer the Windows Update! Then just Google that
KB number to get the description/definition of that particular Windows Update.
As you will see from the posts on this forum, I, along with other members have done a lot of work on this!
I hope this helps!
