Solved Repair Install Compatibility Error:You can't upgrade 64-bit Windows...

C.F my WU thread Servicing Stack 2019-09 kb4516655 & some updates fail clean install.



The Problem:

I did a clean install in september on a new hard drive because my old one failed.
During install I selected to format as "new" drive.
Things apparently got messed up when I installed Convenience rollup(s) aka "Service pack2" or whatever.
Snick & Paul Black helped me out. I learned my WinUpdate.log revealed some issues, SURT.log is fine, so IIRC this means Repair Install should work.

Now I can't do a Repair Install, receive the following error. I did some googling, but prefer to ask here first:

FYI, I followed the steps at Repair Install
- I disabled my antivirus.

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.


32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.


I used the same exact DVD when I clean installed successfully in September.
And, my system is 64bit:









Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but afaik, the forum rules don't say anything about posting outside links, so here's some searches I did. I don't want to proceed without knowing what I'm getting into.

Check which bit version [architecture] is actually installed. Click Start => Control Panel => System.

Let's check which architecture the DVD is . . .

[1] Open an elevated cmd prompt.
[2] Insert the Win 7 SP1 installation disk.
[3] Close any autoplay popup.
[4] In the elevated cmd prompt type dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:X:\sources\boot.wim. Change the X to the CD/DVD/USB drive letter.

What does it say?

what! I ran WinPE from a bootable usb inorder to use AOMEI backupper, why is that listed when I query my Win 7 DVD??

You said I don't have to use TeamViewer, and I prefer not to. And it's not the same problem as the post you copied.


I don't see why I can't get help ON THE FORUM without being pressed to use TeamViewer! If you were ready to go through a Teamviewer session then I didn't see why you couldn't spend the time to walk me through the Repair Install via forum posts.


If you don't want to help me then please don't get involved.

My system looks different post WinPE usb (bootable from iso provided by Snick) There was no G:System Reserved before! This thing ran off a usb stick. Did something overwrite my actual System Reserved partition? now I have to look into that. Appreciate any suggestions Paul:

You verified the current installed OS is 64bit, it appears you verified your repair install as x86/winPE as x86, which is 32bit. Until you locate or create a 64bit repair install/winPE -- nobody, neither Paul or Snick or anyone else, can help. If you appeal to moderator staff, I will appeal amicus curiae, not to oppose anyone, rather to support Snick (and Paul if need be).

Let's all smile, breathe, breathe again; now if your windows dvd was not yet polled by dism command-line, make sure dism will be "aimed" at the windows dvd, do the command-line, report the findings of that windows dvd.

Hi Cittizin7,

So we now know that the INSTALLED OS is 64-bit and the DVD/ISO that you are trying to use is 32-bit!

[1] As far as I know, Cyberpower computers come with a pre-installed key [embedded].
[2] Is there a 25 alphanumeric key for win 7 on the side of the desktop?
[3] Was the OS originally Win 10?
[4] Have you re-installed the OS at some stage with Win 7?
[5] Have you contacted Cyberpower and asked them for a DVD [there may be a small fee payable]?

[6] You might have a recovery partition [reset to factory] . . .

Post a screenshot of the Disk Management => Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.
Pay special attention to Step 5.

[7] If you re-installed Win 7 from a DVD/ISO, then you obviously activated it, you can retrieve your Product Key using either Belarc Advisor or Magic Jelly Bean. Using Magic Jelly Bean, it is the CD Key that you want, NOT the Product ID.
