Solved Building wife a new computer

My wife just goes on the internet; forums, websites, Facebook and kindle books. Her computer has been very slow and problematic. It's a old AMD 2 core with 4g of ddr2 ram.



I have a AMD FX 8150 processor and fan ( I am aware that it is actually a 4 core I get the class action suit notifications) I ordered a Asus M5A78L-Mplus mb and 8g of ddr3 ram.


I will use this and everything else in her current system. I'm hopeful it will work well.


I plan to reinstall her current copy of W7 and may follow the instructions on upgrading to a free copy of W10.


Any thoughts?

Yes generally I set them up with the OS on one partition and everything else on another. The main reason I posted here is to make sure that it will be likely that this processor mobo combo will be fine for years to come for someone just surfing the web.


Oh and she has had a 32bit copy of w7 any reason to (or not to) move up to a 64bit OS?

32 bit Windows can only address 4 GB RAM. 64 bit can address far more. For what she does, I don't know why she would need more than 4 GB.

Crazy how Newegg still lists the FX 8150 as an 8 core.

I had forgot about that when I ordered the 8gb ram. Guess it will be a 64 bit system.

You don't need to install Win 7 to then downgrade to Win 10.

- Download Win 7 (64bits if you going to have more than 4G of memory, 32 bits if you will keep it with 4G). In my opinion, 4G and 32 bits is all she needs.

- Do a clean install Clean Install Windows 10 | Tutorials
- When it ask for a key, insert your win 7 key (must be from a retail copy or from a never used COA sticker key)

In my opinion, Win 7 is still a better OS (more stable)

I already paid for the 8gb of ram so I installed a fresh copy of w7 64 and activated it. I'm with you I like w7 better. I built up a new music computer I7 processor the mobo will only run on w10 so I've had no choice but get used to it. So I will wait till I need to upgrade. It just came as a surprise that free upgrades were again available.

If you need a graphics driver for your cpu graphics,this one supports coffeelake

To get updates, you can use wufuc

If you want, you could update standard win 7 installation media using windows_7_image_updater before
hand - includes everything, drivers, wufuc, etc. It is a big download and takes a while to update the installation media. It also contains a ton of drivers for amd which you can delete before you run it.

All I do on this computer is record and process audio. w10 is running ok and I'm getting used to all the changes.

Not suggesting you should run win7 on that machine, it is entirely up to you.

That might be implied by the manufacturer, but is not the case.
