Installing Visioneer OneTouch 8100 Scanner

in opening … really wanna' thank all of you for the input … the following works for my 64-bit laptop. my environment is toshiba-satellite-p55 … win-8.0 operating system … 64-bit architecture.

fantail suggested installing visioneer's 9420 driver … gafferx elaborated really well with the driver's selection … xweaponx for his thorough elucidation and methodology.

if you have previous non-functional installations of visioneer, you might uninstall those first. afterward, download both of the drivers … then unplug the scanner from your computer. reboot.

make sure the scanner is ready to "plug-n-play" by plugging the device into the wall-outlet. there should be little amber light on front-panel lit … if not, make sure you have "unlocked" the scanner underneath the bed … and that the i/o switch is switched on.

install 8100u.303110.EN.exe (run@admin / win-xp-sp3 comp). once 8100 has been installed, plug the scanner into your computer and turn it on. you will now notice "visioneer-8100-scanner" listed in the program-install interface. pull up device-manager, 8100 should appear in "other devices" … the "properties" window probably will state the driver has not been installed. reboot.

now install 9420.64.4071123.EN.msi on top of the 8100 install … you will now notice "one-touch-4.0" is listed in the program-install interface. pull up device-manager, and 9420 should appear in "imaging devices". as gafferx suggx … while in device-manager, update-driver by going to "browse my computer …" and then "let me pick …". reboot.

i've been using paint-shop-pro(7.0) as the interface with the 8100-scanner (instead of picasa). unfortunately, i've not had any luck using windows-paint nor windows-fax/scan as the interface. you might have better luck. within psp, import / twain / select-source (choose scanner) … import / twain / acquire.

you might find it necessary to go to devices/printers via control-panel … where you should see onetouch-8100 listed … i've allowed windows to reconfigure the connections by clicking "troubleshoot" … which seemed to help.

again … thanks for everyone's help … hopefully my interpretation, in turn, helps others out.

Thanks for the refresher course. It really helped me install on a Windows 7-64 computer I assembled last year. I kinda lost my touch.
Here is my summary of what I did:

1. install picasa. I just seem to need it to do visioneer scanning.
2. I then do all scans via picasa
3. --
4. download and install the first driver 8100u.303110.EN.exe found at Visioneer OneTouch 8100 Drivers and Manuals
5. install it in XP3 compatibility mode and as administrator
6. you get to xp3 compatibility mode by right clicking the icon of the above download (in its folder)>>>>
7. properties>>
8. >>and looking for xp3 compatibility mode. Check it off
9. now reboot but I did it sloppy without doing so and it worked...this time...
10. now now install 9420.64.4071123.EN.msi found at Visioneer OneTouch 9420 Drivers and Manuals on top of the 8100 install
11. --
12. now go to computer properties>> device manager>>> imaging
13. you will see a yellow caution marker because you are only part way finished
14. go to that imaging device
15. go to driver update>>>
16. look for "browse my computer for driver software"
17. press this option and proceed to>>
18. "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer">> proceed
19. you will see a list of scanner manufacturers
20. scroll down to visioneer and left mouse click the word visioneer
21. now select 9420 driver or it may be the only one listed
22. install
23. --
24. now when you go to device manager you will find your new 9420 scanner properly installed
25. so all is well
26. --
27. now for me I need to use picasa
28. so with scanner plugged in
29. start up picasa
30. press import (Upper left corner)
31. you will see two scanners listed
32. the 8100
33. and the 9420
34. guess which number is the one you select_____
35. answer: the 8100
36. the visioneer scan software interface will appear

I'm glad that this still works after five years.

I would still like to know exactly how this Picasa thing works. I'll look through that last post with the steps.

I don't use the visioneer anymore even though I still have it, it's still a good scanner. I have a newer HP scanner that detected automatically. But I also have a "neat" scanner and I also have another HP scanner that basically works by setting the paper on the inside as the thing is set upright. It kind of looks like another monitor. You just slide the paper in there and it scans. I want to use this one because it has an attachment for slides. it is a ScanJet 4670. But I picked up a little neat scanner that has three different scoops for three different sizes of paper envelopes and business cards. It scans it directly to PDF too and this one is much smaller than the other ones but I really need The flatbed scanners because I always have to scan oversized items. The visioneer was good for that especially when it was a 12 inch album cover, I had to get both sides and then fit all the scans together.

I am glad my instructions are still valid, because I might have to use the visioneer again and I know know that the instructions are still here. Thank you all.

I apologize for reviving such an old topic, but I was cleaning out some old hardware and found this 8100 scanner and would like to put it in use again on Win7 x64.

I have read this topic, have the 8100u.303110.EN.exe, but was having a heck of a time trying to find the 9420.64.4071123.EN.msi file. It seems that Visioneer has removed the product page and download for it, nearest I saw was for the 9450.

Anyway, after a lot of dead ends to fishy sites while doing web searches, I "might" have found a source for this file on this page:

However after all the dodgy misdirection sites I came across before finding this, I'd really like to confirm that this is the clean file before trying to use it. Does anyone out there still have this file and can either offer it to download or at least compare the checksums with what I got from the link above? I did upload it to virustotal which showed nothing wrong but would like more reassurance.

The link above gives a zip file but once unzipped to 9420.64.4071123.EN.msi it has these checksums, do they look correct?

Can you be more specific? I read the whole topic, followed the links, found it was no longer available.

I already stated as much?

They no longer have the file linked there.

I should wait a while longer to see if anyone back when the topic was active, feels like at least doing a checksum on the file if not willing to upload it somewhere (which would benefit more people than just me), otherwise I'll just sandbox it and see what happens.

If someone can verify that I do have the clean legit file for it, I'll do the same, make it available for other people.

I had not tried it, but what have you linked? It is not the same (size or) checksum as the 8100u.303110.EN.exe that I have.

Edit: Okay I have made progress. I tried to run the 8100u.303110.EN.exe that I have, in XP Compatibility Mode as Admin, and it returns an error: File size excpected=5830118. size returned=5837960

Last date stamp on that file was from 2016, so possibly it was corrupted at some point. I then tried my redundant backup archive copy of the file and same error message. Ironically this troubles me more than whether the scanner works, if some of my file archives are corrupt!

Thank you for the link to the 8100.exe. I followed prior instructions by gafferx, including rebooting and installing the 9240 driver and browsing to select it in Device Manager, and now the scanner works, at least in Paint Shop Pro 7 that I have tried so far.

Something odd happened. I have no idea where the original power supply for this scanner is. I substituted a random 12V 1A PSU. Scanner would not come on, no orange light on the front. I then substituted a different PSU, 12V 2A, and the orange light came on. Just as a sanity check, I then unplugged the 2nd, 12V 2A PSU and plugged the first, 12V 1A PSU back in, and then the orange light came on again. Strange, though when I looked at the specs for the scanner, it did state 12V 15W (but no specific current rating so I did the math...) so the 1A PSU might be slightly undersized, yet it did work to scan something in PSP 7. That PSU is getting pretty warm though, even with the scanner just sitting idle with the CFL light on, so I imagine that it uses close to 1A even when not actively scanning.

Does this scanner go to sleep after some interval of being idle or must I turn it off with the power switch after every use? Edit: I see a setting for lamp power off inteval in the One Touch 3.0 Tray Icon, will try that and see. Seems to only allow a minimum of 15 minutes which seems long but whatever.

I never did get all the bottoms working right, gives some error window titled Visioneer OneTouch V3.0 and text "The still image client could not be launched. Would you like to reconfigure this button."

I went into control panel Devices and Printers and assigned an image editing app (Paint Shop Pro 7) to the scanner scan properties event button after manually entering it into the registry, but it seems this may only give access to WIA interface scanners while this 8100 driver uses TWAIN?

Regardless after looking around, decided it might be best to just use a freeware app NAPS2, which works fine once set to TWAIN to use it.
