Hi and Welcome

It matters. You need to get as close to identical ram as those in your machine. You can download an app (sisoft sandra, SIW2, etc) to tell you exactly whats in the machine and take those specs to where you want to buy the new ones.

This is just what I would do. I would sell the 2 gigs, and buy and 4 gig matched and binned set of quality ram.

Can it take more ram? Most have a limit to what they can run. The ram has to be a certain type or a) It will not fit. b) Will not work.

Go to Crucial.com and run their configurator. It will tell you what type of RAM you need. You can buy it then and there at Crucial or make note of the exact type required and then go shop for it elsewhere.

Generally, unless you are overclocking, basic RAM from a quality vendor is fine. But there are many different types and numerous vendors.

I built my machine with 2 gigs of Corsair and recently added 2 gigs of Crucial. No issues whatsoever.

Matched RAM kits are supplied by many of the RAM manufacturers/suppliers (Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, etc) and are just individual sticks of RAM that have the same specifications and have been tested together, either in 2's, 3's, or 4's, for optimal performance matching. This is important because, even seemingly identical sticks may not be optimally matched. All components have operating tolerances, and for best results RAM needs to be operating at the same degree of tolerance deviation from the standard rating for the modules. Modules that are identical, but operate at different tolerance deviation to each other, will work but are not fully optimised for the best system performance.

He meant 4 gigs of the same exact type from the same manufacturer, probably even with the same part number. Maybe even consecutive serial numbers. But you rarely need to be that exact IF you properly ID the RAM you are currently using, and then go buy more of it.

What brand and model PC do you have? What CPU is in that PC?

and download and run System Information for Windows. It will give you a detailed report which will probably ID the RAM down to the part number.

Or you can go to Crucial and run their configurator.

not sure if this has been said already, but check the maximum amount of RAM your computer can have.
Both my old iMac CD and mu MSI X320 have a maximum of 2gb, which they both have.

Okay i have done some looking around and it seems i have a ASUS M2N-SLI Motherboard it seems to have two free PCI slots. However i was only able to find the M2N model in the list of motherboards here for ASUS and this is what i got recommended. So will i be added to fit this into a spare PCI slot and add another 2GIG on to my additional ram?? Thanks

If you have two 1 gig sticks now, with 2 empty slots, I would buy 2 more 1 gig sticks.

We don't know for sure, but you presumably have standard speed RAM (5300) and so should buy more of it:

You will see it in the listing under 2 gig kits. I think it is 59.99.

If you think you might eventually go to 6 GB, you could buy a 2 gig stick now and another 2 gig stick later. These are not matched (in size) with your current 1 gig sticks, but are the same speed and certified by Crucial to work OK. If you are going to not go above 4 GB with this motherboard, I would get 2 more 1 gig sticks.
