Opened document from email and edited not 'save as'

Hi,
I hope this is the correct place to ask. I have spent the day editing a document which i stupidly just opened from an email attachment in my hotmail account and proceeded to edit. I diligently saved it throughout the day but did not use the save as function.

I have tried to open a similar document and choose save as to see where the document would have saved but this does not seem to work in Windows 7. I have tried looking in my 'temp' folder but this is empty.

Does anyone know how else I could retrieve this document? It is the only version i have...i really ought to have looked after it better!

No problem this is an easy one.

Go to search type in back up and restore Pick a date prior to your problem. And then like magic, everything is back the way it was when life was good. This will affect all your personal documents, but not system settings.

but first try this one. Go to search pick a phrase that is in your document and it should appear.

Sandra Hi and welcome

If you know the document name and have indexing set to index the entire drive you can search for it. I think you just want to find where it is saved. Is that correct?

The file is probably located in a folder somewhere in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\

"\AppData" is normally hidden
"\Temporary Internet Files" is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in Windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

RichC46 - I don't think i really understand your first suggestion I only opened the attachment for the first time today so if i went back to a date before then i don't think it would exist at all...would it?

Zigzag - I have tried searching the index for the title or a phrase but it does not return any results. How can i check if it is set to index the entire the drive? Will it have definitely have saved it somewhere if I was just saving a temporary file?

And finally, dnorris - I located the temporary internet files folder but i cannot see my file there - what would it look like?!

Apologies for all the extra questions - i have just been told by somebody that Word cleans up temporary copies when you save a document and it thinks it has saved a document even when that is technically to nowhere. This is a very pessimistic option and i'm hoping there's a more positive version out there...

Ok I did not realize that you openend the attachment today. If you did, you would be right it would not be located by the restore function. However, in theory, if it is on your hard drive (indexed location), and you type the title or some words from the document, in the search by start menu, it should show up.

Really, just a shot in the dark, but hopefully an early holiday gift, did you look in the recycle bin?

You mentioned that you saved it but not with saved as function. What was the name that you used to save it?
