making windows 7 like xp

For instance, the little icon on top of the explorer window that jumps you up one level; where is it? Gone. All you've got is the back arrow, which isn't the same thing.

The breadcrumb itself incorporated that ability and then some making an extra button superfluous. But I suppose that won't matter to you. But sounds like you are better off with staying with Windows XP for ever and ever.

Breadcrumbs are not the same! They make it harder to go up multiple levels, especially when dealing with long file names.
My Classic Shell software adds a toolbar with Up button: Welcome to Classic Shell
The next version will integrate the Up button directly in the title bar of Explorer. See this screenshot (of course the final version will have better graphics :)):

Hopefully it will be ready by the end of this week.

I seriously do not understand the issue with that arrow going up. All you have to do is click on the folder target in the explorer bar. If it says C:\\Computer/AAA/BBB/CCC and you want to go back up a folder, simply click on BBB. You can even go straight back to AAA or Computer if you want with one click.

Also, for firseal, I believe you mentioned that you dislike the new taskbar. Here is what you do. Right click the taskbar, properties. Check the "use small icons" box. For taskbar buttons, click on never combine. Then you have a perfectly usable taskbar just the way you like it. You could also drag the minimized programs across the taskbar (reordering the programs, something you cannot do in xp).

Also, get this program for a more classic interface like xp.
Welcome to Classic Shell

No offense to Anybody:
Seriously, I believe that those who do not want to change should just stay in XP, unless they are willing to open their minds to changes. It is because of these that Microsoft is unable to innovate. Look at Apple, their entire community is perfectly able to immediately accept any changes with praise. This is why Apple is so innovative, and has such an advanced GUI. Microsoft, to attain the desires of users who do not like change, is constantly crawling like a turtle.

The taskbar was changed in windows vista, i really don't understand why people clinge on to obsolete designs, windows xp is like the ugly school kid people feel sorry for and windows 7 is the one everyone wants to hang out with.

For the same reason some people think some paintings, drawings and sculpture are high art and others think the same items are yard sale fare. People have different tastes and just because their's don't coincide with yours doesn't make their's wrong. Unless, of course, you're Barack Obama.

I know, my mothers the same, when she got her new laptop with Vista on, first thing she did was change the look to basic because she prefers the look of XP. I just don't understand it.

i didn't believe my thread is still going on after all this time lol from a couple of simple questions turned into a huge debate which is cool but we have solved half of my original questions so far he he. me personally i love both the XP and vista gui's the same but i think if people want the old way they can have it if they want to i mean Microsoft doesn't have to do but other people can if they really want to.

Why are you all being so hard on Firseal? I don't happen to think I should happily lap up whatever Microsoft spoon-feeds me. I hated Vista and believed what people said about Seven; that it was Vista as it should have been. Well, I think it's Vista with a coat of paint, but that's not the point. The point is, I have genuinely tried to like it, and it just isn't working.

I don't want to be forced to put everything in libraries. I don't want to be treated as if I'm a little kid who can't be trusted with knowledge of how the OS works. I don't want to be dodging and weaving around obstacles to get to what I want to do. XP just worked. Why can't I put Seven into a mode that "just works?"

For instance, the little icon on top of the explorer window that jumps you up one level; where is it? Gone. All you've got is the back arrow, which isn't the same thing.

It is now very easy to drag and drop something into a folder instead of into the window the folder is in. You have to make sure you drop it all the way on the right side, not just in any blank space like you used to. Oh, yeah, all you have to do is do a search for what you just dropped into a folder but you're not sure which folder it was... Well, no, because Search doesn't work anything like it used to. I still haven't figured out how to make it search EVERYWHERE.

There are lots of maddening things like that; why the hell should I be forced to get used to them? XP has the capability to make it look like Win2k. This time there is no such choice.

I am angry because much of this has come about as a result of an attempt to address failings in the Windows GUI that have been there for decades; I and many others have long ago found workarounds and don't have any problem with them. Ditto all the security holes built into previous versions; I just removed the IE, the WMP, the Address Book, all the other built-in trojans and never had any problems in that area, either.

So, how about just answering Firseal's questions, because I am asking the same ones.
Try talking to Ivo instead. So far he's been the only member of sevenforums who offered solutions rather than told me to put my head onto the table when I don't like my soup the way mom happens to have cooked it.

Just downloaded and installed. Classic start menu works fine.

But I don't see how to add the additional Windows Explorer toolbar... it did not appear by itself. Am I supposed to do something, or check something, or set a setting or something? How does this get produced? Do I need to reboot?

Thank you, Ivo. I have installed it and it goes a fair way toward addressing my issues. A lot of ppl here seem unable to appreciate how much little irritations in the UI can make you hate the whole system. Kinda like when you notice your new car has a little flaw, but from then on, you don't notice anything else and the flaw gets bigger and bigger.

I fully understand the frustration with Windows 7. It appears that MS is attempting to create the pleasing appearance of the MAC OS, but have sacrificed the easy functionality of XP. I have been keeping a list of the things the pre-adolescent minded programmers decided to leave out of 7, that made XP a really convenient and powerful OS.

what I find funny most? is how you guys seem to like XP so much but wanna use 7 so badly, and if XP is so much better then why not stick with it and leave it at that! instead of going through the trouble of hacking se7en to mimic XP! also it bothers me somewhat that all the people bitching about what an inconveniance se7en (which it isn't!!) is when there is a TON more better things with se7en than XP! thats just like saying "wow I rather drive a horse and buggy than use a car because the car is too fancy and a little hard to learn all the new gadgets" you wanna stay in your little time capsule then go ahead, but dont come here asking to turn your car in to a horse buggy! STAY WITH XP! now I build and repair computers since win95 and I can tell ya I see all the benefits that se7en has to offer more than XP, but I would be here all day typing!! and I can tell you from experience and knowledge se7en is faster than XP! I installed se7en on a my pent 4 along with XP on another partition and I can SEE with my own eyes that se7en runs faster! even my old game ravenshield that was made for XP runs better in se7en!! and so I got rid of XP and never have looked back! I think what bothers people is this forum is for the future of windows moving forward not going backwards! perhaps you should go on a XP forum hmmmm? now I am NOT saying your not welcome here, just that hacking se7en to mimic XP is not what this forum is about IMHO!

Xp WAS good.. and yes Windows 7 IS also good I always loved Xp but Im kinda loving 7
Now what I don't get is.. treat people like idiots if they decide to stick with it.. maybe they can't afford to follow tech? But honestly also.. breadcrumbs is not an option that I would remove
7 is not faster in some areas btw.. I even think most games go faster on XP
Now setup of the OS that is faster and also easier
Also better security seems to also come with being more intrusive
And mind you I am NOT taking a stab at either OS just some features

not sure if this was mentioned prior...
to disable breadcrumbs in Classic Shell: title bar tab > disable breadcrumbs
to enable standard menu toolbar (file, edit, etc.) from explorer: organize > layout > menu bar

if you CS options don't seem to be working, make sure you have IE browser extensions enabled

there's many other settings in Classic Shell that will make 7 look/act like XP, both explorer and the start menu. it also fixes that goofy scrolling bug in explorer when you click on the expand folder icon and the folder scrolls to the bottom

How bout a "classic" windows 7 theme? And I think the basic and high contrast themes do a fair job there
I wouldn't touch anything else biut Win 7 besides that anyway.. the OS basics should be left alone
