NOD32 caused slow-down, AVAST hasn't

I wanted to post this for future readers as the info is in a thread that does not have "NOD32" in the title. (http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-vista-32-bit-your-experience.html#post593840)

I recently did a fresh install of W7 Ultimate 64-bit, and as I have done for years, installed my trusty NOD32 AV [vers 2.7]. The program seemed to work seamlessly at first, but then after being on the system for awhile I'd notice that when I tried to delete even a small file, the progress bar would pop up and it would take several seconds to delete. This behavior was finally proven to be the AMON scanner in NOD32, (thanks to WindowsStar for thinking out loud and leading me in the right direction). What was odd is that sometimes I could boot and it wouldn't do this for the entire day... the next day, it might do it within an hour of booting, and once the behavior started, even a [warm] reboot would not fix it.

The other problem I had (which I Googled months back and know is a common complaint with NOD32), is that when I would download a file, the system would hang at the last few bits...then when NOD's scanner finally kicked it, it would take an inordinate amount of time to scan the file. While this was occurring, the system was frozen. Very irritating!

I thought it might be b/c my version vers of NOD32 was so old. I downloaded the latest trial version for 64-bit (v 4.0.474.x IIRC). Again, for the first hour or so everything was peachy. Then very soon I had the same behaviors.

As a result, after years of using NOD32, I switched to AVAST Free edition, and no more problems! Not only that, AVAST found 4 infections that NOD32 allowed on board (archived files from previous systems)... one of which had a rootkit.

I know everyone has their favorite programs, (FTR NOD32 and AVAST both got perfect scores in the latest VB100 tests in W7 and all other OSs), but if you are having funky delays in W7 or Vista (I had these same problems in Vista 32-bit when I had NOD32 running), I'd try switching to another AV program.

I *am* curious to know if other NOD32 users have noticed either of these behaviors... the slow deletes OR the hanging at the very end when downloading a file? ... I wonder if it has to do with the chipset or CPU? I know I have had the hanging problem even on my desktop... about the only thing it has in common with my laptop is that I am an AMD and nVidia fan, so all my systems use AMDs. (And my desktop also uses an nVidia graphics card, like my laptop, but the chipset on the desktop is not nVidia.)

ACER Aspire 4530
AMD Athlon 64 x2 (2Ghz), 3GB RAM
nVidia chipset

Personally, I'm not paying for any antivirus packages again. Probably ever. I use MSE - it has everything you need and naturally works with 7. I would be very careful with what antivirus package you choose. 7 is new, and the vendors are getting sloppy - NOD32, AVG cough cough.

When this Norton 360 licence expires on the laptop in my specs, MSE is going to be installed.

+1 MSE

Had put Avast on over 100 machines without any probs, but if Avast is lightest weight then MSE is nearly invisible.

Yet it found four Trojans on a friend's machine that the usual Avast boot scan/Spybot safe mode regimen missed entirely. And it found them on the Quick Scan it does at install after updating itself.

It then seems to disappear and never bothers you again, for anything.

I'll have to add MSE never expires, no licence, nothing. How refreshing. The only thing you need is a genuine OS - which you should have anyway. I use 7 practically daily, and I would never consider a cracked version, especially as the OS is vital.

NOD32 is the only AV I have ever continued to use. I've tried others but always went back. Never had a single problem with NOD32.

Fair enough, but its now unnecessary - MSE has everything you need or will use for nothing.

Why would I stop using the product that has won more VB100 awards than any other and is consistently at the top of it's game and switch to an inferior product? Makes no sense!

Yes inferior. I don't know where VB Bulletin gets it's money but it isn't vendor funded. It is an independant organisation. Anyway, who cares? It's only 1 tester. NOD32 outperforms MSE everywhere you look. Why would I switch?

The performance is better, it won't break 7, and the scanning detection is close.

If I didn't have NOD32 for free, then I would be using MSE on my main machine. I have MSE on my HTPC and on all machines I build or repair, but MSE doesn't catch everything, so I'd recommend using something like Malwarebytes to scan the machine periodically, in addition to MSE.

Not to start a riot, but I am no fan of spyware, and AFAIC MSE is spyware; checking your system to see if you have illegal software, cracks or the like. That's not looking for AV and viruses... that's being a cop.

Moreover, with their proprietary code, who knows what the heck that program is doing. I have been using computers since 1988, and started out thinking Bill Gates and MS were GREAT... but after being in the industry from 88-95, and seeing how MS behaved as a corporation in an effort to force people to use MS products that were most often inferior to the competition... after researching cyber rights for the next 5 years from 95-2000 and seeing how MS (and the DMA) plowed over the privacy of its customers (Google their record on privacy) and all the ways MS was purposefully deceitful.. over and over...; I don't trust MS as far as I can spit. I don't use any MS programs, but the OS, and only b/c I have to. (I wish the programs I require came in Linus flavors, but they don't.) The third party programs I use are there for a reason. No MS email, no MS messenger, no MS Outhouse... no MS IE. No MS anything... and certainly no MSE!!

Again, JMHO.

If NOD32 hadn't given me grief, I wouldn't have switched either. But I am happier with AVAST because of the problems NOD32 caused.

Btw, what CPU/chipset does your system have?
