XFX 5770 or BFG GTX 260?

So, to sum things up, this is all just speculation.

You're always going to get different recommendations here when talking about graphics cards. Some will say ATI, and others will say NVidia.

In cases like this, we need to look further at your system specs, in particular the chipset used by your motherboard. If it is NVidia based, then I would go with NVidia. For an AMD based motherboard, use ATI. If it is neither, then you could use either.

I have to ask... just how exactly did you arrive at this conclusion?
just from reading about the people who use them  the one's i've seen using amd chipsets have had less problems that i've seen

I think it might be more of a coincidence thing. I run an nvidia card with an ATI chipset/AMD Cpu and haven't had any issues.

I used to run AMD 4000 dual core on a AMD chipset motherboard with a Nvidia 8600GT, I had no issues what so ever ;)

I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card too, maybe a 5750 as I don't think my case will be big enough for a 5770.

Hey ThePizzaMan,

I'm not tearing you apart, just the idea. I think it's important we try and clear up misinformation, for everyone. I think you would agree, right? Sometimes we all have ideas that aren't entirely accurate... I know I'm guilty of this just as much as the next guy... nobody can know everything.

That last line pretty much sums up what I've said. Cpu's do not talk to graphics cards, so what cpu you use is irrelevant. Nowhere have I read that certain cards have issues with certain chipsets. If you've read different, then please link me.

Some guys base their recommendations on the cards they happen to like, irrespective of anything else, as Dwarf rightly pointed out. I think a little of that may be going on here?

Good choice. I suggest using the 196.21 drivers also. DX11 has very limited support right now. Maybe a year or so down the road it will be worthwhile to upgrade.

well when you mix the nvidia onboard drviers with ati card drivers (meaning you only uninstall the old drivers) and vice versa you get issues, this i've seen personally. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't you never know

That's an entirely different issue than what you've been saying all along. Yes, mixing drivers isn't a good idea and can lead to problems, but that's not what you've been saying.

What you've said is that, across the board, nvidia graphics cards have higher instances of issues when coupled with AMD chipsets. It's not even like you said it was chipset specific, like the 790's don't get along with ATI cards, you implied that all nvidia chipsets don't get along with ATI cards, and visa-versa.

I maintain that that's nonsense. Look guys, if either ATI or nvidia had such dramatic across the board issues, that would be newsworthy. We'd hear about it; we'd see the review sites doing testing on it; it would be known industry wide... but that's not the case at all.

This entire premise is based on nothing more than a couple guys reading a couple forum posts written by guys who may or may not know what their real issues are. No part is going to run right for everyone. All parts are going to have problems. What exactly those issues are is situation specific until proven otherwise. Yes, conflicts arise, but that does not mean that x card does not work with y chipset... there's just no evidence of that.

Hey there,
I would say go with the 5770. It's loaded with newer technologies (ati stream, dx11, etc.), is slightly cheaper, and would probably be better off with an AMD based system. Also, I can confirm the ATI 10.2 driver suite is perfectly compatible with windows 7 64-bit, and 10.3 is about to be officially released.
go with the MSI R5770 Hawk. It will oc farther and really give the 260 a run for it's money (trust me, I have it) check out this review where they compare the two: MSI HD R5770 Hawk Review - Overclockers Club

hope this helps

dirt 2, grid 2 and bad company 2 use dx11.

They look great, but in all honesty, who has the time to notice when you're in the thick of it?

Especially in multiplayer.

Hey there,
I would say go with the 5770.

I just want to point out that their drivers WERE NOT compatible with my Windows 7 x64. Whether this is from odd install discrepancies or hardware differences, it did NOT work for me (after spending a weekend trying and failing to get it to work).

While the card itself seemed pretty good, I cannot say the same for the drivers.

NOTE: This is just my experience, I have a friend who bought the same card and loves it, and I know many others that have had good (and bad) experiences with it.

To be completely honest though, the thing that REALLY PISSED ME OFF about this card was its utter lack of documentation and information.
I literally searched for over 8 hours on the internet for information on safe temperature ranges, for buggy driver fixes, for any information at all about why it was not working right, or even why it WAS working right!
AMDs own website was broken; I could not download the drivers from their site AT ALL!
AMDs own forums had next to no information about the 5770, and my post went completely unanswered (it is about 2 weeks old now).

So perhaps I just had a bad experience, but I am not too fond of AMD at this moment in time.

As I said, perhaps it is.

I just wanted to point out that there is the possibility it won't work.
No offense intended.

bob,
it's too bad about your driver issues, but for the most part i'm, only hearing good things. this may sound dumb but did you make sure to completely remove old drivers, download the 10.2 suite, install the card, and then install the drivers? and on the overclocking page of ccc (i can't remember the name right now), you should see a temperature gauge that shows a range of acceptable temps, and when they begin to go in the red. but no, I have not found anything documenting that either.
and as an afterthought: many of the arguments seem to have strayed from compatibility between chipsets and cards, but as I understand it the original post just asked which card itself was better. If we can agree that there is no proof that an ati card works better on an amd chipset, then there is no need for digressing. I understand compatibility is an issue, but as long as you completely remove any old drivers, I don't think it will have an adverse effect on either card.
and yes, I previously said an ati card may work better on an amd chipset, but that came from something I read previously that stated that the picture quality seemed better when a 5770 was paired with an amd chipset when compared to nvidia. may be rubbish, but it popped in my head. (and i must say, I have noticed an improvement in picture quality after upgrading, although this is hard to quantify)
sorry for the long post

What I ran into was that the driver would NOT install. The installer would crash every time I ran it. I was able to run it through command prompt, but this is not something I should have needed to do.

Guess AMD just hates my computer
