Just got my GTX 480

Got my ASUS GTX 470 today. The fan speed was at 40% default which was 60C idle. Set it to 60% and it is around 50% idle and haven't seen it go higher than 75C yet (not done Furmark yet, I know that'll ramp the temperature up). The fan does get noticeably audible from 70% onwards, but it's still quieter than my 8800s and cooler.

I might put some MX-3 stuff on it when I get chance to. Just wanted to get it installed and running today.

if you add some MX-3 let me know how it goes. I've been reading ok drops at idle but a solid 5-7c drop at load.

and yea BFG is coming out with there cards soon, but for now it's eVGA and ASUS to trust. but I also like gigabyte and thats what I got. they have 3 year instead of 2 year warranty. and unlike the newly allowing Lifetime Warranties that PNY has started. Gigabyte allows 3rd party fans and coolers. And no one else allows that but eVGA and BFG. i talked to Gigabyte support yesterday. they said I can add fans, 3rd party coolers, or waterblocks as long as there's no Physical damage and i replace stock fan for any RMA or replacement needs. PNY and MSI said you touch it the warranty is gone basically. lol

There wasn't as much on as I thought there was going to be, but then there didn't seem to be that much on it. Replaced it with an even layer of MX-3 on it. Will leave it running a bit to let it set in, but it seems better so far. If I'd let it running at idle for a few hours with the stock stuff, the idle temps would creep up and stick to around 58-60C. Been running for about 30minutes now and it's staying around 50-53C now.

Tested load temps a bit with the new Stone Giant benchmark and it dropped load temps about 5C. I'll keep an eye on it over today and see how it goes, but there's definitley an improvement with MX-3.

Edit: Played Crysis Warhead for about an hour. Load temps never went above 78C, and I've read people hitting high 80s/low 90s on this with stock thermal paste.

and before you idle's would get around 58c.. thats high. I'm idling while overclocked and slightly overvolted at 41c but I'm also running 62% fan speed.. Keep me posted on how it goes. my DD waterblock should be here any minute today. and then pics will follow shortly.

My case hasn't got the best cooling in, only some Coolermaster LED fans. Aren't the best, but still keeps everything within decent temperatures. The MX-3 compound definitley helped with keeping the temps on the 470 down though.

I might look at some replacement fans, as the airflow on these aren't the best around.

Wouldn't the ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5900 series (only 1 card i think, forgot remaining digits) still have better performance? From what i've heard, it runs incredibly hot and in crossfire if you have stock cooling, you'll burn your hardware, but its OC ability and everything is great!
I'm looking for a new card - but sway me, the mobo i have planned to buy can handle either
I still prefer AMD graphics anyway over Intel graphics. - don't mean to make this war

5970? In sheer FPS - for the most part on most titles, very much so. Then again, it is a dual GPU vs a single.

These GTX cards seem to have a better min framerate and superior DX 11 tessellation performance though.

They also handle Anti-Aliasing better.

Oh, they also do physx.

Honestly? Outside of benchmarking - it's an absolute waste of time.

You need to Overclock the CPU pretty high to avoid it being a bottleneck (holding the cards back) and quadfire scales absolutely terribly in games.

Even tri-fire shows (5970 + a 5850 or 5870) shows little to no FPS increase in the majority of games.

No one needs quad gpu. Shit few things need dual. Just get a dualgpu single card with dx11 and you will be set for the next 5 years, guaranteed. They still use pixel shader 3.0, games wont need 4.0 for a bit longer.

Not necessarily.

Each card have their own pro/cons. It's up to you (the consumer) to work out what will benefit you the most.

(Even I can't decide yet between a 5970 or a 480 )

Ok replaced TIM with Mx, applying an extremely thin layer with the card spread method (tried X method, temps only dropped 1c).
Was going to disassemble the memory side, but one of the very small screws was being stubborn, so I backed off that idea for now.

Removed my Vantech Tornado TD8038H 80mm (this thing is nuts without a fan controller!) from the side panel and placed it in the front bottom fan cage (feeds cooler air more directly to 470 fan).

I'm happy to report 46c !
Seems the combination of MX & a changed air flow did the trick.

I can say I'm very happy with the XFX 5970 BE I have. It doesn't get very hot, although my case helps that I must admit. DX11 performance, down to shader model 3.0, everything works fine. Also, drivers did not get bad for my 4890 running in my mainstream rig, like many said. AMD I think realized the issue, things have only gotten better, with "both" cards, so, well, at least one person here says the drivers are solid. I know some fear AMD/ATI because of drivers, but I've been pretty surprised... I was a total Nvidia fanboi until the 4xxx release, took me ten minutes to realize the quality and price.

Anyways, it's a "REALLY" hard choice between what I have and a 480, those things are straight up nasty. I would recommend waiting... what else can ya do?

All I can say with any certainty is it runs cooler than everyone said it would, but as with the OP, his 480 is running cooler as well, so, eh. I don't know, I guess maybe it's best to choose based on your platform, and budget. I think they're both fantastic cards. Also, please, realize if you actually need the power! I see people buying these things and running one display in 1080, and I can't believe how stupid it is... oh well.
