I'm really hoping that one of you guys can help (and I'll rep the heck out of whoever finds a solution for this one!!!)...

I've got an HP ze4325us Laptop. I've upgraded the RAM to 1GB, and it's got a 40GB hard drive in it. Runs XP just fine. Vista won't hardly run at all (although Vista gave me the same display problems I'm running into with 7, but wasn't worth trying to fix). I installed 7 on there, and with the exception of the display problem described below it runs great! I really want to get it working, so I'm hoping someone will give me some assistance.

Here's the deal:

Upon initial install of 7, I get in Device Manger my display listed as "Standard VGA Adapter", but it has an exclamation mark next to it. The display only works at 640x480 (does not even fill the screen) and at 4 bit color (which is awful to look at). When I try to install drivers (first tried the XP driver) The display then is listed as Radeon IGP 320M, but still has the exclamation point, and the display doesn't change. Under properties I get a message with something about the device is not able to find sufficient resources (which I don't quite understand how that's possible).

I've tried some hacked ATI drivers, but I get something about not having a low level driver.

Any ideas or things to try? I really want this to work!

Thanks!

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

Have you tried right-clicking the device in Device Manager & selecting update driver? This will search Windows Update to see if it has an up-to-date version of the driver.

Thanks for chiming in! :D

Yep, done that. Windows always determines that the most up to date driver is installed.

The other option is to completely uninstall the device. This will cause Windows to 'Default' naturally then it will automatically download a driver from Windows Update. This new driver will have no interferrance from any existing driver and should install correctly. I've had this happen with my lappy a handfull of times and it's always worked that way.

Keep us posted :)

Additional: again, 5 hours is a long wait but i had to sleep some time LOL

Did that too (and this initial problem was with a clean install of 7, so I would assume that it would put the correct built in driver in place to start with?) and same result. Completely uninstalled the device, and it reinstalled upon restart to the same state as when the initial OS install completed.

What's still so odd about this that I've never seen before, is this Code 12 error that is listed under properties from Device Manager. The device cannot find sufficient resources (which the machine certainly has available in terms of RAM, etc.). I've seen lots of times where an initial driver (or wrong driver) won't let a particular display device go to it's full potential, but it's the error code that seems like it's keeping even basic functionality.

Oy. Thank you for the continued ideas!

Yeah, that was me. It didn't go anywhere there, felt like it may have been in the wrong topic. Got much more tractions here. I've had to go back to XP (which is SO disappointing, because 7 runs so well, but just can't get the video past 4 bit color and 640x480). All the typical workarounds for intsalling drivers just haven't worked. Bummer.

Radeon IGP 320M is what appears in device manager when I try to install the XP drivers from HP for the laptop. (Which I believe is the Mobility Radeon 9200)

I don't know what to suggest now as i've just checked ATI website and there is only a description of the device and not any drivers

I did all that leg work. Took me forever busting open installers to decode inf data etc. I put the right driver from Microsoft Update Catalog on my dropbox and linked to it above.

Got the file to download, and got it to install. I was so excited!

Unfortunately, the behavior of the display is exactly the same. I only have the option of 640x480 4 bit color in the screen resolution properties. Also, there's still that yellow triangle, telling me the device cannot find resources. Images of the result attached. I *really* appreciate your helping me with this! My wife is very anxious for me to get this working for her (she loves win 7 and is hoping to be able to use this machine, but this display resolution is just not acceptable).

Any possibility of an HP bios update out there somewhere? I read something about a "HAL" change from XP to Vista that might be causing trouble here? That's really where my "expertise" ends, so I don't know.

Yes, these shots of the display are immediately upon uncabbing and successfully installing those drivers from baarod (THANK YOU!). I was so excited when it successfully installed! (Note: The other two items w/o drivers you see in the display - modem and audio - just haven't been installed yet, there's no problems there that I know of, just stuck on the display).
