Microsoft seems to think this does: Full service scan for Windows Vista and Windows 7 It's the one and only "registry cleaner" recommended by Microsoft for Windows 7. Keep in mind that no other cleaners can really be trusted a 100% for Windows 7 because none of them were written for it. No popular registry scanner has a completely rewritten Windows 7 only version.

Nope, doesn't exist.

Reg cleaners are and will always be for the most part, snake oil and relegated to the farthest reaches of mythicism.

With that said, using something like CCleaner to do some minor cleaning of some things is not bad, when it is actually needed, but it has been proven that Reg Cleaners have a tenancy to do more damage than they resolve.

PS.... The one located on the link above (OneCare Site) is really the only one I would trust,, and I had forgotten about that. Why? Because it is developed by MS, they don't have this all out ambition to blow anything and everything away from the registry just cause some programmer trying to produce a (so called) better product thinks those things should be removed.

Registry cleaning is not something that should ever be done as a regular maintenance cycle, it should be done when it is absolutely necessary due to major issues with apps and the OS as a last resort before a Nuke and Reload.

You do not need a registry cleaner. If you do use one it is probably just a matter of time until you return to the forum with bigger problems. Use a good A/V and firewall. Use CC cleaner without the regisry cleaner and maintian the computer with ocassional defrags, disc cleanup etc. You will be very happy that you did.

Cleaners have a tenancy to do more damage than they resolve.

That certainly is my experience with them. When they run successfully and say they fixed stuff...i see no performance difference whatsoever. Sometimes when they run and say they fixed stuff, programs don't start, menu entries disappear, strange errors show up out of the blue and usually a restore to a previous backup is required to get things working properly again.

None. Just keep your hands off the registry. There is nothing to be gained and a lot to be damaged.

Win 7 does not need a registry cleaner. Forget all the "wisdom" you learned about XP. Win 7 is not XP and does not manage the registry the same as XP.

Win 7 is much more efficient at managing the registry. If you are very knowledgable of the registry, you can use Ccleaner to delete keys left over when uninstalling programs. However, these few keys will not make 1 millisecond's difference in performance. If you run Ccleaner or any other registry cleaner and do not know precisely what you are doing, you will have problems down the road. There are no gains to be had from using a registry cleaner and the risk is great. And defragging the registry is a myth also.

Well, many of us here have lots of experience. Many of us (myself included), do IT and server admin tasks for a living and have done so for many years. We generally are pretty well versed in what works and what doesn't and we are very skeptical of claims that something is magical and fixes all problems. We often have to see it for ourselves and then benchmark it and prove a difference.

I don't speak in generalities usually, I speak from experience. Hobbyists often praise the reg cleaner and stores will often try to sell you registry cleaning services as it's a very easy thing to pin issues on (broken registry)...but quite often the true professionals don't look there first or second...but rather last when the crap hits the fan.

That's what the computer professional response would be. The same hardcore computer enthusiast response who strongly recommends endorsing or using registry cleaners would have long disabled the system restore feature as it's totally unnecessary and consumes far to many precious computer resources.

lol pparks1....one can only hope he/she didn't do that.

I didn't see this thread in time to say "Backup your Registry first and dont even do it even with a backup unless you are not really worried about hosing your system completely" . cause that risk is there.

It should.

Wipe free space just deletes blocks the OS marked as 'empty" even though theres still DATA there.
it may effect tools that attempt to retrieve deleted DATA however, such as DiskDigger.

But in this case, the system settings from Restore are actually in & marked as occupied space so it would not be effected by Wiper.

Yes it will. But unless you turned the function off, Ccleaner backs up the registry before deleteing any keys. Open Ccleaner and restore the registry.
