Two suggestions:

1. A complete set of systems specs might provide a clue to your issue(s).

2. You might also want to look at the games's system spec requirements since what little info you did provide for your system looks a little suspect.

Other than that I have no further suggestions at this point in time.

Good luck.

If you really want to try and get the game running I suggest you look through these 46 pages. While some of these didn't work for others, it doesn't mean it won't work for you.

Also, as has been mentioned throughout the many posts here....system specs help.

Not trying to be mean, just trying to help. Lets us know what you find.

Good luck

Just download it again and install it. You can also burn the game to a disc if you choose.
I beleive D2D allows 5 activations of the game, and the windows live portion is 15 activations.

For me, I found Installing the game in Vista SP1 compatability mode resolved many issues. I had to do this to even get the game listed in 7's game explorer.

Patch before first launch.

Hello,

I've got a problem with my F3. I installed the game yesterday:
- I try to "Run as Administrator" from Fallout3.exe file,
- I try to run this game in compatibility mode for Vista,
- I installed latest path 1.7
and game still does not work :(

The problem is as follows, when I choose "new game" program (the game) going to stop and I see only black screen with freeze mouse arrow, when I checking Windows Task Manager the application "not responding".

After searching through many threads on this subject, i finally found one that helped me on gamespot.
Along with my Asus graphics card a program named Asus Gamer OSD is included. Removing that program solved my problem with crash on startup on W7 x64

Just thought I would post my 2 cents. I had a lot of problems with this game right after upgrading to Windows 7, but it turned out to be the simplest solution that actually fixed it, and it's a solution I don't see mentioned very often in this thread. It's definitely the first thing to try, since it's so easy and will make no permanent changes to either your computer or the game. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, have 8 gigs of ram, and a Radeon HD 3800 video card and the game is installed on a 1TB drive. The game ran beautifully under Windows XP with the same computer (but with half the ram and half the space) so it's definitely not hardware in my case. It would freeze/crash on startup of the game, just a black screen. I tried messing with the graphics settings, most notably setting water rendering to 'low' quality. That did not work for me, (I think it may be related to nVidia cards specifically in hindsight) but apparently it does for some people. I also tried a few other things, which I can't remember anymore. What the problem in my case turned out to be was a conflict with the Aero effects in my desktop theme. I set my desktop theme to 'Windows Basic' and the game launched and ran fine. I've played through the whole beginning of the game until you leave the vault and checking out the Super Duper Mart for Moira with no issues whatsoever.

Just a note, I have the Steam version, and Steam is currently set to Windows XP compatibility mode. When Steam is set to compatibility mode, it extends to whatever game it is running. But i tried this solution prior to doing that (setting it to compatibility mode was in order to get Luxor 2 to run) but the game will still not launch properly unless I turn off any Aero effects. If you are trying compatibility mode with Steam though, remember that it is not the game to set, it's Steam itself. Though Fallout 3 will launch without Steam, it has no copy protection so you could just skip Steam entirely.

The same solution works for Bioshock, btw. Setting the desktop theme to Basic is now my go-to first solution for any game that wont run.

Hi everyone,

just thought I'd share my workaround to a very strange and intermittent problem I was having getting the game to launch.

I recently purchased Fallout 3 GOTY off steam and installed it. played the first time without a hitch and was in game until you leave vault 101 without issue. I saved, with the full intention of resuming the following evening.

The next time I tried to launch the game (from shortcut, steam or game library tab within steam) I got the error "fallout 3 launcher has stopped working" and in the background the shape of the launcher and picture came up, but none of the text for play, options, etc. sometimes the text would show up, but fail and not be able to click any of it to proceed past the launcher into the game.

I rebooted (the universal first step to "fixing" any windows problem), and it worked again. the next night, it failed again. and again. then it worked (so I played for a bit), then quit and tried to relaunch with a fail.

as near as I could figure it, once it made the ini file in my games\ fallout 3 folder, it couldn't process it for some reason. delete that ini, it goes through the "fallout 3 will now detect your video settings" song and dance again and then the game will launch... that time. exit and relaunch and the error returns.

I read through almost all of this and many other threads and found a lot of people were fixing their problem of crashing while in game by running in xp or vista mode. I have had no issues while in game (so far, knock on wood), but clicking the "more information" button when you get the stopped working error told me the fault was in the launcher itself.

I set the launcher to run in XP SP3 mode and so far I've got it to come up without fail over a dozen times. the only problem is that win7 now asks every time I launch the game "do I want this program to make changes to my computer". a little annoying, but not the end of the world.

I tried the windows basic mode suggested above, as well as many other suggestions in all that I read and this is the only thing that (seems to have) worked for me.

From my Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues...

14Permissions – For various reasons Windows security features may limit permissions to folders or drives. If you’re having issues starting or saving games, check to make sure your user name is included in the "Security" tab and has full read/write permission for the game’s folder(s). Requires Admin rights! See Tutorial on Sharing and Permissions – If you don’t want/need to share the folder just do steps 1-7

Give it a try :)

BTW the game shouldn't need to be run in XP Mode. I played the entire game under Vista Ultimate x64 without issue. This was the before any of the DLC releases!

I"m also able to run the game under Win 7 without XP or any other modes.

No...I'm not saying people don't have issues with the game, this 47+ page thread says otherwise ;)

Good luck.

thanks. I'll double check that tonight, but I'm fairly certain I checked all folders / files associated with FO3 to ensure my user name (member of the admin group) had full permissions on everything.

something interesting from the Fallout 3 FAQ on the Bethesda website:

Does Fallout 3 Support Windows 7?
Fallout 3 is not an officially supported title of Windows 7.

47 pages agree with this statement.

Again, my issue wasn't the game itself (at least so far), just the launcher would work only when I crossed my eyes and stood on one foot. I saw a lot of hacks and bypasses for the launcher, but sometimes simple is best. I set the launcher, and only the launcher, to xp sp3 mode and it works.

It would be nice if games just worked, but with the infinite possibilities for hardware configurations it is understandable when issues do come up. understandable, but still frustrating and annoying.

something interesting from the Fallout 3 FAQ on the Bethesda website:

Fallout 3 is not an officially supported title of Windows 7.

That's a "we don't know why the game has issues with Windows 7, so to cover our @ss we'll hit em with the ole "not an officially supported title of Windows 7" so don't bother us" statement.

This is standard when you have issues and the company hasn't a clue on how to fix it so they start blaming other companies.

Case in point... I had a slight issue with my HP monitor only to have HP tech support tell me I needed an Nvidia card because the monitor wasn't supported on ATI cards  HUH!!!

I kid you not!

At any rate good luck in getting the game fixed and working.

Peace
