Hi,

I have a friends acer laptop that I'm trying to fix the internet connection on. It is connected to the internet but I can't get online in IE8! I have connected to my wireless network fine and I installed MS Secutity Essentials via usb. I was able to download the updates for Security Essentials from the internet and did a quick scan (no threats found).

I tried installing MS Office 2010 beta but it said it couldn't get online to download the files needed for installation.

When I open IE8 it just says 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'

What can I do to try and fix this?

Thanks,

Duncan

Hi Duncan, have you setup an internet connection. Even if you haven't some things can still connect to the internet to do updates. Right click on the Network icon in the system tray, and then attempt to setup a connection using either local or wireless connection. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Lee,

I have already done that and the wireless connection is enabled and showing as connected in Network and Sharing Center. Also my wireless network has no security on it so that should not be a problem. And as I said Security Essentials was able to access the internet to download updates.

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

Go into IE8, Select Tools and then Internet Options. Go to the advanced tab. Click on reset IE8 settings to default.

Let us know if the problem still persists.

Thanks electrotune1200 and Tews I have tried both of your procedures but unfortunately neither of them worked. Also thank you mitchell65 I downloaded the fixit program and ran it on the laptop but it didn't resolve the problem either. The runtime error message I posted earlier is one I'm getting as I start win 7 so not sure if it is directly related to IE.

here is a capture of the wireless network connection status... so you can see the internet is working but I can't connect with IE, FF, Action center or Office Beta install. But Security Essentials was able to download it's updates.

Hello,

You can try this. Run an elevated command prompt, type in the command sfc /scannow and hit enter. Let the scan complete and see if this resolves the issue.

Secondly, If the sfc /scannow fails to find any errors, maybe try running a repair install with your Windows disc.

Are you getting the runtime error on every boot?

Hi Duncan
On re-reading this thread I gather this laptop is connected to your wireless system. Have you tried connecting with an ethernet cable. I think you have a wireless problem here!

It definitely sounds like some malware had infected the machine and added a proxy, usually set to the loopback address. If you can open a command prompt and get an IP address from your router, than it is most likely an address configured in the proxy settings.

Thanks electrotune and apple2005 I tried both your suggestions and neither fixed the problem.

Now I have done a system restore. It has brought mixed blessings! I can get online with FF but IE seems to have become corrupted and just won't respond. Also loads of programs that I had uninstalled have been reinstalled and I can't now uninstall them again. Is there anyway of fixing IE and cleaning it up now I have done the system restore?

As Tews just mentioned, I agree it's time to try the repair install.

If that fails to fix the problem, it's time to start thinking of a clean installation. It may sound like I'm jumping the gun a bit, but sometimes you will invest a lot less time resolving a problem that way.

Try the repair install first and, keep us updated on your problem.
