Hot weather overloading my fan.

Noise coming from heat sink? You mean the little fan sitting on top of your CPU heat sink?

I would differentiate between four types of fan noises: rushing air (the whooshing sound), gear noise (like the whirring sound of a 50x CD-ROM spinning), grinding or rattling noise (a sort of chattering sound as the bearings bounce around in a broken race), or a vibrating sound (made by a loose fan frame or blade).

Monk

Yep, I mean the fan on top. Maybe the noise is from how fast it's spinning??

You know what? The only way I'm going to the correct answer to the noise question is if I bring it to my pc guy. Who knows if I'm hearing it where I think I'm hearing it. I listened to the psu, then the heatsink thingy and then down at the video card and it seemed to me it was coming from the heatsink. I think I need someone else to listen.

The card is supposed to be loud, but I've had it for awhile. Why hasn't it gotten loud until now, if it is indeed the card? Normal wear and tear?

The noise isn't grinding, rattling or vibrating. I can't decide if it's a whoosh or a whirring. Watch, I'll bring my pc to him Saturday and it won't be loud. :(

Thank you :)

Since the noise has recently appeared I think it reasonable to question what is going on. Good idea to take it to the computer guy, explaining to him that it is new and see what he thinks. I am a bit like you: something going on that was not there last week - I have to find out what it is and what it means.

If it's a fan going bad, I at least want to have a replacement on hand for when it quits. If it is a CPU fan going bad, I'm not going to wait: I'll replace it now to avoid the possibility of it quitting while I am in the middle of something important and then the CPU overheats and the system shuts down.

Let us know what he thinks.

Ok. I did talk to him last week and he told me to turn off the pc when it gets above 80 out, so I'll have to bring it there and force it on him. lol

It's nice and silent right now. It's also in the 60's right now.

Ok, thanks for all your help and I'll get back here when we find out what's going on.

Don't know about you Kid, but I'm dying to know what the source of the noise is. Since it's new, I can't help think it's a fan on the way out.

I'm so aggravated. I go to the pc today and the power isn't on annnnd the power WON'T go on. So I bring the pc to my guy and ... naturally it boots right up for him. So he asks if I have it plugged into a surge protector. No. He gave me a surger protector. He also told me that I didn't need to take off the side panel to blow air in, becuz it has 2 large grates already in it. I stayed there for 30. Of course the pc didn't get loud either. So there ya go. No answers on where the noise is coming from.

Can I plug a surger protector into another one?

Tell me what you think. I *think* the noise is from the video card. 1. I didn't know that card runs all the time until you guys told me that. I thought it was only in use when I was in game. So when I get home from work and it's hot out and I hear the noise, I had ruled out the video card. 2. It's quiet, I put the game on and a few minutes later it get noisy. So this is what is leading me to believe, now, that it's the video card. The reviews said the card was noisy. Could it just be the card is noisy, even more so becuz of the room temp, or should I worry that it's on its way out? When I put my ear to everything, it didn't sound like it came from the card, but maybe it is?

I'm checking out temps so I can put the fan on and see if it cools off with the cover still on.

Ok thanks for that, Kid. He was wondering, too, if maybe that outlet is messed up. So I got to wondering if maybe I shouldn't plug the new surge protector into it and could plug into another.

Some gfx cards are very noisy, if the reviews mention it I'd be inclined to believe it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, just keep an eye on the temps. ;)

I whole heartedly agree with the Kid. The one review that I passed along did mention the noise so I can only assume that is what you are hearing. But, the bottom line is indeed, the temps: if they stay were they are, I too, think you are OK.

Glad to add my $0.04 worth (inflation) anytime.

"Old" thread but that may help. If your computer case (where all the stuff except monitor and keyboard/mouse) sits in a too closed, few air flow space, then your fans will keep blowing hot air to inside your computer, which will make the entire system hotter than what it should be.

Either ATi (HD4000 series or higher) or NVidia (9000 series or higher) video cards have internal features to "downclock" themselves when idle, making them run slower than when we are gaming or using any 3D resource -- while Aero has some 3D features, it doesn't count as a 3D resource for idling detection, which means video card will be idle state while in desktop. Unless something is misconfigured on the ATi/AMD Catalyst Control Center or in NVidia Control Panel, they should run very, very cold -- usually ambient temps. To give you an example, my ATi 4850 GPU, when in desktop, has its fan completely shut down -- 0 RPM. When gaming, it tops 70C. That's the standard for it.

For the CPU, it's almost the same. If it is idle, then the power savings should take care of downclocking the processor to lower states, which also should make it run colder. I'm unsure if your motherboard does allows CPU fan to be shut down when not in use, I know a couple motherboard makers which implement this feature. There are some apps to control this behavior (SpeedFan is one I used and loved): they can adjust CPU fan speeds against CPU temp readings. The "hotter" the CPU goes, the faster the CPU fan spins. And the opposite, too: The colder the CPU goes, the slower CPU fan spins, until it is shut down.

There may be another fan on the motherboard, over the chipset. This one usually has no speed control, although SpeedFan tool was able to adjust it as well.

PSU is the only place we do have fans but we can't control it at all. Larger PSUs usually have thermal controls to slow their fans by a bit, but not much. And the PSU when dusty does lots of noise: not only from the fans but dirty does not dissipate heat, and the PSU thinks it's getting hotter and hotter, until the fan is always running at full speed, acting like an helicopter :) If you have access to a compressed air equipment, do yourself a favor and blow the dust away from the PSU. Maybe a good vacuum cleaner can help. Please note, you should never ever open the PSU case: both the blown air or the vacuum cleaner should be used on the air entrances on the PSU's outside.

If the constant heat is still an issue, then you may need to look at better cooling systems. Improved CPU fans and heatsinks, improved GPU coolers, the sexy water cooling systems, your wallet is the limit :)

Ohhh yep .. my case is between my chair and a wall. I have it less than a foot from the wall. It used to be closer until I hung a fan up to blow into the case. I'll see if I can .. move it elsewhere were it can get more air.

I definitely need an ATI 4000 or higher then. Thanks for that info.
I always uninstall the catalyst control center, as I have no idea what to do with it.

Thanks HQuest :D

There's word on The Sims site by officials (after multiple complaints from Sim gamers) that there are issues with playing the game with a Nvidia card. They said, too, that they were working with the makers of the card to fix the issues. So I'm a little shy to get that card. I'll go thru the link you gave me with the ATI cards to try to find that Omph! :)

This is the thread that won't die huh? lol
