Will I be able to UPGRADE from the RC to the Final?

I'm currently running Vista x64, and was considering upgrading to the Windows 7 RC.

The only thing that's stopping me is this: Will I be able to upgrade from the RC to a full version of Windows 7, or will I have to do a fresh install?

Hello Crazydog, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but you will most likely need to do a clean install when going fromt the RC to the full RTM version. You might consider dual booting with Vista and Windows 7 for now though to get familiar with Windows 7 without losing what you have in Vista.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Yes, prolly have to do a clean install, but hey...that has it's good side too!

As with MS Beta's when they start Escrow & RC branch, they eliminate the ability to do upgrade installs. I upgraded 2 builds and I wanted to try with 7077 but the upgrade was denied since it is Escrow branch.

Like Brink, I think you should try a dual boot and see what you think. I've had Vista in dual for 6 months now and I think I've booted it twice and actually almost ready to get rid of it and reclaim that space.

Good Luck!

Haven't you people read that you should NEVER do an upgrade? This is getting beyond ridiculous.

Actually ms is requesting that we do an upgrade from vista to rc.

"never" is such a strong word. you can use "not recommended" but not never. Many of us have upgraded successfully from many beta builds.

When the final release of Windows 7 comes out, if you purchase an "upgrade" version instead of a full, fresh install, then I suppose you would be able to upgrade.

Excuse me??

There are times when upgrade install are NOT recommended but doing an upgrade install is not the end of the world my friend.
Upgrading was buggy back in the early XP days and that's when all this "Don't Upgrade" stuff started, but the process is well refined now and many...many of us have had exactly Zero problems with upgrade installs. Basically all an upgrade will do is rewrite the system files and registry (if needed) and change some resources and dynamic links, all which are backed up in case of a problem.

I've upgrade installed on Vista and three builds of W7 and while the Vista upgrade was not without an odd issue, the W7 build upgrades have been problem free, so let's not perpetuate this old statement anymore.

We test these things in beta builds, that's what it's used for by those of us who actually use it for more than a Free OS, and the upgrade process in W7 has so far been very reliable.

I wouldn't upgrade from a beta to a RTM just because there may still be issues from the beta; just extra cautious about that.

From the looks of the setup, it has to be. But I would just wait until MS puts the RC on their website. I think office is expensive and important (as well as photoshop), and I wouldn't want to risk losing them.

That I agree with and so does MS, but normal upgrade installs like from 7022 to 7036, 7048 and 7057 are working fine.

umm....?? ive run EVERY build of W7 so far & every one has been overlay'd on top of the previous build, a clean install is recommended but by no means essential....

i have NEVER performed a ''fresh'' install & have never suffered any file degradation b/c of it.....:sarc:

no doubt as ''BRINK'' states the final build will need a clean install, but apart from that upgrade is the preferred method.....(for me)
