Giving Nvidia 9600GT to a Friend

Ok so I'm gonna give an Nvidia 9600GT 512MB graphics card to my friend, but first I would like to know if his system is good enough to run it. He has a Dell XPS gen 4, 1GB of RAM, a Pentium 4 3.20GHz with Hyperthreading technology, and an Nvidia 6800 graphics card. That's the only things I know about his system, and I'm not sure about his power supply. So would his system be able to run an Nvidia 9600GT graphics card?

Yes, according to your friend's computer manual, he does have a PCI Express x16 slot on the motherboard that he can install the NVIDIA 9600GT in. He will also need to have at least a 400W PSU.

He will also need to have at least a 400W PSU with one PCI-E 4-pin power supply cable (not a 4-pin molex cable) to connect to the graphics card.

LOL, you are correct. Sorry, I was had my old 9800 GT on my mind that required the connector.

I think you'll be safe, I used to run the same card on a similar spec PC as my media center device and now it's in my Win 7 desktop..... I've been unable to kill it off.

Check a wattage calculator first if you're concerned about the power supply.

The 9600GT doesn't use a power connector.

Just to clear up any confusion, regular the 9600 GT does. Yours is the later version known as the Green version and it doesn't, and requires less power,

There is also a Green edition of the 9800 GT and it too does not require an external power connection.

The PC your friend has is what I had prior to upgrading. I ran 2 6800's in SLi and then changes to an MSI NX8800GTS which was factory OC'd and the RAM upgraded and it ran flawlessly, it required a power connector and I had the PC loaded so he should not have any problem running that card with his stock PSU.
