Windows 7's new feature: Windows XP Mode

Guys isn't this bad even though it provides 100% compatibility?

I mean a virtual machine provides quite a bit of overhead so I kind of doubt performance might be optimal using XP Mode!!

If Win 7 would have been compatible without such workarounds I guess it would have been much better!

With Virtualization technologies embeded in our modern CPU it's really not a crap.
The only limitation is the total amount of RAM you have in your systeme and then, than amount of ram you can allocate to the VM. And with moderne PC the amount of RAM is not a real issue for performance, if you really need to, you can put 8 or 16GB in your System today!

I try all the new OS that cam out in VM for first instance, and today you can have full power in your VM. In ex. Seven run as fast on a VM than with an "hard installation" (no Aero glass because no 3D acceleration, but that's not the point).
For some "XP app" which doesn't have full compatibility in Seven virtualization is the best way to do.

Well I am sure it will not be used much. However for those few programs that don't work with 7 or as well as it should could use the XP mode to get it working!

For anyone who had trouble understanding that, XP should not be included because if people wanted to use XP, then they would use it. Windows 7 is for the people who would rather use Windows 7. Then I asked him if he knew where I could find a macedonian translator :)

The fact that XP Mode is only for Pro and ultimate Edition should what the point.

For most people, software are updated to Vista/Seven and there is a really little number of software that doesn't work one Vista/Seven.

But for professionnals it's totally different. Lot of them have "pro" soft coded .. hum hum with the feet ... And this software are often really expensive because made specially for one client.
It's the main reason for non-upgrade in enterprise, but with XP mode no more excuse :D

C'mon guy -- what planet are you on.

You can run NOW decently performing XP VM's on a 1GB laptop running VMWARE. -- OK this won't run games or other stuff but works fine for Windows "Corporate front ends" like SAPGUI, ORACLE etc etc. and a load of real time XP Stock exchange data retrieval stuff etc etc.

The hardware you are talking about (especially if this is built into W7 itself) will run this without batting an eyelid. Great move by MS BTW.

Don't forget the way Virtual machines actually run means you can in no way compare their needs 1:1 with a real machine.

You can still do an awful lot on a 512MB XP virtual machine that you wouldn't even THINK of trying on a 512MB Real machine.

Cheers
jimbo

Sorry but you do realize that if you want 512MB of RAM in a VM you need that on top of the memory to run the host OS. This is my point. A baseline host OS now a days needs minimum of 1GB. I prep laptop images with windows sysprep and a number of other tools. I know exactly how this works.
If you are going to run a VM that will eat 512 MB of RAM, not including the VM app itself, you now need 1.5GB of RAM to successfully run the system. Se we are still talking about a RAM upgrades. And you sound as if you are talking about simply running a VM and that is it. Well lets say you are VMing the SAP frontend. Then running Notes, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, a couple IE windows for web based apps, a few proprietary in house apps. Well now we are talking about running a VM along side a heck of a lot more then just running a VM.
Sorry but the reality is that you do need more machine if you are VMing. Esp in the RAM department. And my other points still stand on the patching issue.
