Fan controler....

So as i gather it the yellow wire on a psu is 12v, the red is 5v, the orange is 3.3v and the black is earth? Am i right??

If so my question is, I've just been a cheap arse and bought one of These to power 2 of These.

Can i solder both fans to the controller and use the wires from a molex instead of the motherboard to control the rpm's?

I've got my new liquid going in when my board gets back from RMA and i want to be able to control the fans because i've had them for a while now and took them out due to the fact it sounds like they're about to take off...

CPU fan pinout


method i'd use;

1. hook the fan(s) to the controller (it's a good idea to use one per fan)
2. clip JUST the power wires, high enough up so you can still use the wires from the board connector
3. stick a bit of heat shrink on the wires to prevent shorts, and zip tie the loose ends on the board connector to keep them tidy.
4. wire a molex connector to the red and black wires headed to the rheostat using solder and heat shrink tubing (you can use electrical tape, but the heat shrink route looks cleaner..)
5. hook board connector(s) to any spare fan headers (to allow rpm monitoring) and hook the molex plugs to the appropriate power molex
6. ???

to answer your question, yes you can. the only difference is that the motherboard will not be able to tell the rpm the fans are spinning at.

no need for any under volting if he's hooking it to a rheostat controller, but i did forget to post a link to the molex pinout ^_^;

so yeah;
molex:
yellow 12v+
black ground
black ground
red 5v+

also, you'd hook the red wire on the controller input (the one that would normally get plugged into the board) to the yellow wire from the molex. or if it's got a pigtail, the red wire thats plugged into the back of a yellow ;o

So if the red wire on the controller gets connected to a yellow from the molex then does the yellow get puged into a yellow still?

And i'm not too bothered about being able to see th rpm's as it's only to keep the noise down.

However if i could still monitor them it would be cool..

Would it damage my board to try splicing the fans and running them off the controller and still connect the controller into the board header pin like it's meant to be?

Will it just not start them? or could damage the board it's self?

at 0.53A, _one_ of those would probably fry your motherboard header in rather short order. however, i made up a quick little visual for you
