Dell Dimension Upgrade - No Audio Driver/PCI Input Device?

I just upgraded an older Dell Dimension 4600 desktop from Windows XP to W7 (32 bit). Since completing the upgrade, there's a message in the lower right hand corner stating "No Audio Output Device". When I click on Devices, both the Multimedia Output Controller has a "!" as well as the "PCI Input Device".

When I click on the MMOC, it states there is no driver and it doesn't even give me the option to search for one. I checked Dell's site and it doesn't appear they're offering device drivers for this computer for an OS other than XP.

Anyone have any thoughts?

It may be that there are no Win 7 drivers for a desktop that old. You could purchase a soundcard that is Win 7 compatible and install that.

I tried this and when I select "Drivers", I get a message stating it's unable to locate the drivers. I also did a search using the drivers disk I received with the Dimension and I get the same message.

I also tried reinstalling right from the utility disk. I get a message stating that the files already exist "would I like to overwrite." Everything seems to unzip fine. When I click on setup.exe, I get a message stating "Error installing iKernel.exe: (0x10000).

I don't think it would matter when going from XP to 7.

Your audio driver can be found here. I'm not sure which one you need. You should be able to figure out what you audio device is in your computers BIOS.

Thanks. I seem to be having problems downloading from Dell's site. When I click on "Download", I get the Dell Driver Download Manager. When I click on the file after it's downloaded, I get a message stating that there are "no files to download."

Am I missing something?

Thanks all-

I was apparently having a problem with Dell Download Manager. I downloaded the files to a flash drive using a laptop and transferred both the original driver files as well as the Vista drivers to the driver folder. Unfortunately, the system recognized none of them.

With the Vista drivers, I got a message stating the hardware wasn't supported. For the original drivers, I got a message stating that it couldn't find the drivers.

Any other thoughts?

Right click the Vista drivers, and in compatibility mode, tick run as admin, and then choose windows vista SP1 for compatibility, assuming this is an .exe.

Do not use the download manager it does not work right uninstall it clear the cookies then use IE the driver should install by just clicking on it it is an exe file.
I use the 64 bit version on my D8400 in win 7 with no problems when Vista came out that is the driver i used for 32 bit because Dell did not list a Vista driver for the older computers i cant really say if it works for 7 or not !
One other thing if Dell has a desktop system software utility driver for your 4600 you may want to try installing it first then the sound driver

After much googling, I got my audio to work. I was installing win7 on my winxp. Somehow there wasn't any sound/video drivers (can check by "device manager"), so I downloaded the audio driver for vista and did an update for it. It works now!

Yes!

Majority of times, drivers come "zipped up" ie compressed, to speed up downloads.

Your system cannot (see the .exe) load the driver/s until you have 'unzipped' the file (de-compressed) first!
