Do you compress your C drive?

do you compress your C drive and is there any cons of doing that?

Yes, anti-virus applications will have a hard time scanning it and will take forever also Windows itself will run a lot slower. Hard drives are fairly cheap these days, so why compress? Just get a bigger one or an other one if possible.

The only drives I would consider compressing would be storage drives that I don't access very often and even then only if I was desperate. Never do it to a system drive.

Y not? I'm currently compressing a C drive on the laptop.

Well you asked and I answered with just 2 cons, I'm sure the experts will list many more. The only pro that I can see is that it will give you marginally more space on the drive, and it wont be very much. Better to get an external drive perhaps if you are that desperate for space.

Try it, you can always decompress it again if you find problems.

I tried it once years ago with my first PC and everything crawled, so gave up on that idea.

I'm just giving you the benefit of my experience.

Edit: Whatever you do don't try to stop the process once started. Let it complete.

it only reduced the space on the laptop by 2 GB.. what a waste of time. Why shouldn't I do it on a system drive? and is there any more cons such as errors?

any cons???? Sure, it slows the drive down as it has to compress everything.

When you compress anything, each file and folder has to be decompressed or 'unpacked' in order to be read by the system, or scanned by security software, that all takes time.

You can decompress it again....!!

I think the only pros for compressing is the space. For me, it's not a good reason for compressing. lol
Ex_brit is right, hard drives are cheap. ^_^

well this is very strange. B4 compress the drive. It was around 34 GB used space.

After decompression it 41 GB So I deleted the older recovery points. But it's still not back to around 34 GB (around 38 GB right now).

Going to defrag the C drive and see.

I'm trying to cast my mind back all the years since I tried it, and I think I found the same result. The system may take care of some of that extra space in time as it compresses old files etc.

I think you'll find that the system will eventually give it back, but I can't guarantee that.

No I'm talking about messing with settings on the OS, like compressing the system drive. Stuff like that.

We get semi-regular cases here where C drive compression makes Win7 unbootable.

The only way to fix it is to browse into the C drive through the Load Drivers utility on Repair CD to rightclick C>Properties>uncheck Compress Drive.

i didnt think anyone compressed their c drive since the 90's! back when a 350meg hd was a good size.
