Very slow Seven 32bit and unable to install updates

Hi,

I own an ASUS X50R laptop. Two days ago, I have upgraded my Windows Vista 32bit to Windows Seven 32bit and have encountered many problems since then.

It is running extremely slow due to 90% of my ram being used when running two applications (web browser and msn) simultaneously.. I have 2Go RAM and a 1,72Ghz processor, therefore, according to microsoft's recommendations, I should be fine. Also, it seems like the mouse's pointer is always waiting for something to load (It is not moving slowly, yet the blue round circle flashes very often). I am thinking the problem may come from my graphic card, an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 since Asus doesn't not offer any possible download for windows seven compatible drivers for many graphic cards (including mine)...

On top of that, I cannot install updates since I get an error 8000FFFF. Seeing as it wasn't working, I assumed that I might need to activate Windows Seven for updates to be available to me. That didn't help...

I have heard so many good things about Seven but am now wtuck with a very slow OS which cannot be updated. Can you please help me?

Many thanks !

Oliver

Extract Catalyst Software Suite to C:\ATI

Right click on video card in device manager. Update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Double click on the .inf. Hit ok and let it install.

---------------------------------------------

Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

and delete everything in there.

Then copy and paste each line to command prompt, hitting enter after each.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 atl.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll

regsvr32 wuweb.dll

----------------------------------

Make sure in services.msc that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is set to automatic and running. Do the same for Windows Update and Windows Event Log services.

command lines not working and ram overused (still)

Hi torrentg, thank you very much for your quick answer.

I have installed the ATI suite and the problem still remains though the driver is now up to date...my pc's ram is overused and the pc is very slow.

As far as the command lines are concerned, I have done what you have said but the following command lines are not working:

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Therefore, I haven't tried to go any further in checking whether windows update was now working. Can you please tell me what to do ? :(

Check Windows Update and see if it works.

What did it say when you tried those commands?

And also, what makes you say the ram is "overused?"

Did you reboot yet after installing video driver?

I would first run "sfc/ scannow" to check system file integrity.

This is the next best thing to reinstalling the OS to overcome corruption picked up during in-place upgrade.

An even more thorough repair would be the Win7 repair install which saves programs, files and settings but reinstalls the OS underneath. It has corrected bad in-place Upgrades in the past. Run Win7 Upgrade install from desktop.

Hi Torrent G

Hi Torrent G,

Windows update still isn't working.

When I tried the commands, it said (in French): "Couldn't load xxxxx.dll module. Verify that the binary file is stored at the place you have specified or debug it to research potential problems with binary or independent binary files. The specified module cannot be found."

I can see my RAM is being used to its maximum because of the widget on my desktop which shows CPU and RAM. CTRL+ALT+SUPPR confirms this problem when I look at the status of my RAM which is clearly reaching the top of the graphic.

I have rebooted since the update of the driver but nothing has changed.

Cheers

Hi Gregrocker,

I did run "sfc/ scannow" to check system file integrity as I read this in another thread. The content of the sfc.txt document said :

I don't know what this all means or if it is what I should be checking out after running sfc /scannow.

Like you said, I have also decided to reinstall Windows Seven over Windows 7, the install seemed to be going well until the install program ended telling me that the install could not be completed. I'm afraid it may have something to do with the fact that I have already activated Windows 7, thinking that would enable me to use Windows Update...

Cheers !

Well...*rolls eyes sarcastically*...so you come to us instead of using common sense? Yes of course. Reinstall Windows. Fresh and clean is better.

I have attempted to do a repair install. The problem is it won't finish! It sends me back to where I am after 3 hours of hoping the install will work.

Is there anything I could do to avoid the install to stop before it's over? Maybe something on my system is preventing me from reinstalling Seven. Maybe it's the activation... (?)

I would sure like to do a clean install, starting it all from scratch. Yet, I do not have an external hard drive to store my data and programs and I don not have an install CD for windows seven since it was a student special offer downloaded off Microsoft's website.

Thanks for your help, as you can see I'm not an expert....

Edit: Note that my cd/dvd player needs repair.

You don't need external drive for clean install. When you install to same partition/drive, it will make a Windows.old folder.

Sorry, I can't help with you not having an install DVD. You'll have to figure something out about that part.

Sorry I thought clean install meant formatting the computer and reinstalling the OS...I thought 'repair install' and 'clean install' were two different things.

I have the install files on my desktop soI don't really need an install dvd, do I? All I need is to launch the setup from my desktop and to wait till it's over, is that correct?

They are two different things. What you just said would perform an upgrade. Not what you want.

Burn the install .iso to a DVD. There are many tutorials around here and net you can find to do this properly. Then boot to the DVD using bios setting to do so. You'll have to change the bios setting or hold f8 to choose DVD at startup.

When you go to install, tell it to install where Windows is now. Do not format. It will make a folder called Windows.old that you can check for anything you want to keep once Windows is back up.

When you are satisfied it no longer contains anything valuable, you can use disk cleanup to remove the folder for good.

Ok thanks ! A few things before I proceed...

- I can't find Windows.old, I thought I would be able to find it when upgrading from Vista to Seven. Will everything on both my C:\ and D:\ be saved in this folder ?

- I can't find the ISO file, all I have in my folder is this (see picture attached)

- If I manage to boot Seven from this dvd, will I have to tell my bios to boot from my asus pc next time I turn on my computer or will this be automatic?

Thanks !
