Which you rather have a $1000 cpu or a $1000 gpu?

GPU fo 'sho, CPU's dont usually ship with custom coolers, neither they are modified alot, in other hand GPU's ship with custom coolers and factory overclocks and all kinds of shizzle plus heavily modified PCB, which overall gives more bang for the bucks.

I chose GPU.
Back in 93/94, I had a $2500 GPU and a $1400 CPU card in my Amiga 3000. Back then I was young and had too much disposable income.
I have a problem justifying a $400 video card nowadays.

Depends on your application, in my laptop I have $1000 worth of GPU's running twin 4870's in CrossFireX and the CPU is a Q9100 Quad Eng Sample. My desktop is running an XFX HD5870 xxx Edition which is around $450 and the CPU is an i7 975 Extreme which is well over $1000 both fit their needs.

What if the cpu i was referring is an i7 980x and the gpu i was referring to is an Asus Ares (basically a HD 5870 x2). Both is free and the asus ares isn't limited anymore. But you can only have 1 choice.

Both would be an absolute waste for me. Usually at the upper end you pay a premium to just have the fastest...even if it's only a bit faster than the others and ultimately will be slower than something which comes out new which is cheaper.

In that instance if your main function with your PC is CPU intensive which means RAM intensive and hard drive then I'd go with the CPU, RAM and an SSD drive for the OS and SATA HDD for programs. If the intensity of what you need is graphic intensive then the GPU's, RAM and again SSD Hdd combo, just my $.015 worth.
