Remember that expressions in paranthesis () are executed first, followed by other expressions in order of hierarchy. Operands of the same hierarchical level are executed in order from left to right. The omission of an operand at either of these locations n( and/or )n in an equation implies * by default, i.e. n*( and/or )*n. So we get the following:

48÷2(9+3) = 48÷2(12) = 48÷2*12 = 288

It would have been 2 had multiplication had a higher hierarchical level than division.

that involves a combination of division and implied multiplication.

The standard way to read arithmetic expression (i.e. order of operations) involves dealing with parentheses first, then you do all division and multiplication operations from left to right, then all addition and subtraction operations from left to right.

One thing to keep in mind is that not everybody follows the standard. Some people prefer to do implied multiplication before other multiplication and division operations. You do brackets first, gives you 12.

And as a few others have said, division and multiplication have no precedence over each other, so you simply work left to right, start with the division to get 24 then finish with the multiplication to get 288.
