I have reinstalled my Home Premium three times today because I think updates have been wrecking it and I have also been having to change the boot order in the BIOS constantly.

Now this third time I have been checking the updates as they come up for things like IE8 and IE10?? and just hiding them cos I don't use it.

Now the really odd thing I notice is the sheer number of boot devices in my BIOS one listed is my HP Oficejet printer so can anyone offer me an answer for that??

The board is an Asus P8Z77-V.

Printers often have things such as USB or Card readers so technically they could be classed as boot devices, although not really an often used one

You may have an option in the BIOS to not show unwanted devices, but not all do - if no option just ensure the most used ones are at the top. Boot drive first followed by USB then Optical Etc

Also be careful with hiding IE updates as, although you may not use IE, the system often relies on IE parts to run - and not always just the latest versions - so best to let them load all version updates and let the system sort what it needs

I have three machines with Windows 7 - 1 desktop and 2 laptops . My first job after installing the OS is to stop all updates. They are all running flawlessly for years.

I personally on my computers.

I update to I.E. 11 and allow I.E. 11 to sort out the other I.E. that are installed. (eg. I.E. 8, I.E. 10). Then reboot.
When I.E. 11 is installed I check updates again for any KB's related to I.E. 11.
When all updates are completed and a couple of days have gone by I use Disk Clean up to get rid of the update junk.

During all this updating, installing, rebooting and what not I use sfc /scannow to keep a watch on things.

I believe but can not prove that Windows 7 uses part of I.E. even when I don't use I.E.
I get this believe because when I use CCleaner their is always a little something that comes from I.E. that is cleaned. Not very scientific, I know.

Thanks fellows it is just I don't want to have to clean install again I would have to top myself but there may be something in the IE updates because pics for example show up in the listings as those flower icons and not the pic itself??

Truly I am really concerned this machine is going home because I have used the latest ISO's form the download site and why the problems??

Am going to run another sfc and chkdsk soon to make sure things are still ok.

Also after a fresh install you'd need a couple of updates for windows updates to work properly.

Ok so I have gone into system restore YET again and went right back to before I installed Macrium.

Booted up and it went so quick so I did a chckdsk /r and rebooted.

Now I have 151 updates to be installed so I installed the April 2017 one only and reinstalled Macrium.

The machine is still running quick and most of all I am very loathe to go back to those updates because I am on the edge.

So my desktop still has those flower icons for pics as in this snip.

Most of all I see in my other 7 machines there are a quite a few Visual C++ stuff in Programs and Features but this machine has only one entry see what is in the snip again.

Have not downloaded Adobe Reader or Flash Player as yet trying to work out just what is going on (VERY)

Edit: Callender mate that link to Folder options did the trick with the desktop icons which leaves me still treading on eggshells waiting for the next crash. Plus the link to the other thread makes for some interesting observations.

John I don't know if this will help but here goes.

A couple of week ago I did a install of Windows 7 Pro/64. Then I installed all the needed things off of the motherboard DVD.
I installed all updates except, Skype, nVidia drivers, Intel drivers and Microsoft MSR Tool. After several reboots things were okay.
Then I install video card driver and the latest version of MSR.
I really didn't have any problems doing it this way.
I have 204 updates installed.
I did it this way because I got tired of sorting through all the KB's using Google.

Ok Jack well if the thing crashes again I will give your way a go because I am still getting crashes / going very slow / having to reboot when it hangs etc and the pics are still being attached as those flowers on my desktop.

Updates I am sure are the problem and I do one at a time and the restore if things go south. Currently I have this lot (in pic) backed up and am frightened of even looking at them to be honest. In update history there is nothing only because I am sick of restoring the machine all the time

I might try Callenders fix again so I can see what those desktop pics are actuality.

Oh the board disk mate I try not to use as it contains a lot of rubbish and things that have caused issues in the past.

I do have MBAM full version on pestering me to buy it and I think I might uninstall it because I know Kaspersky doesn't like it that much.

Just as by the by I find MBAM and SAS pick up heaps of stuff on my 10 machines than they ever do on the 7 machines and I have Kaspersky on all my gear - seen anything like that with your machines??

I mean MBAM usually nothing on the 7's yet 250-350 malwares on 10 and about the same for SAS

Another thought.

For testing; on another clean install use MSE and not KIS. Then get your updates and see how things go.
On my two systems MSE and Malwarebytes get along very well.

Hmm actually Jack I think I must have downloaded the wrong ISO form that download site as per why he disk is MBR and not GPT.

It would explain the crashing and no updates I suppose and trying to get an ISO from either Microsoft or the Heidoc site is proving almost impossible . Microsoft keep giving me an error processing it and to try later when I give them my boxed DVD key code.

So I think I am in for yet another install and do it from the original DVD OEM I bought I know this will mean a Ben Hur of updating but what choice do I have??

I am so sick of Microsoft right now I could gladly burn the computers in the back yard.
