Ok boss give this a whirl.

1. Open Control Panel, select Printers
2. Click Add a Printer
3. Click Add a local printer
4. Select Use an existing port (should be preselected), change the port to "Desktop \*.pdf" (Adobe PDF Port), click Next
5. On the next page, click Have Disk...
6. Click Browse and browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF (or wherever you have Acrobat installed), click OK.
7. It should now show a series of "Adobe PDF Converter" entries. Select the first one and click Next
8. Change the printer name if desired, uncheck the box to use it as a default printer, click Next
9. Do not print a test page, click Finish
10. Find your new printer in Printers. Right click on it and select Properties, Advanced
11. Click "Print directly to the printer", click OK

Let me know if it doesn't work.

I follow the the above instruction for Windows 7 XP Prof 32 bit. It does install the pdf printer. However, when I print from Word, it does not create the pdf file.

Adobe 8 Pro PDF Printing

Getting Adobe 8 Pro PDF Printer to work in Windows 7 64bit. Since the port is not created when Adobe 8 is installed it doesn't work. I have been able to install "do PDF v7". When installed "do PDF 7" creates a do PDF port. In the properties of the Adobe PDF printer, select the do PDF port and apply. This worked for me.

Thanks jelyman but I do not see "Desktop \*.pdf" port in my drop down menu, that is where Iam strucked

I had the same problem and after searching the web:
9. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printer
10. Right click the "Adobe PDF Converter" > Printer Properties > tab "Port"
11. "Add Port..." > "New Port Type..." > Browse to the same folder ("C:\Windows\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\Adobe PDF") >> [Open] >> [OK]
12. Select the "Adobe PDF Port" > "New Port..." >> [Close]
13. Close everything
14. Return to right click the "Adobe PDF Converter" > Printer Properties > tab "Port"
15. You should see "Desktop\*.pdf" (Adobe PDF Port) listed there >> [Check] >> [OK]

It should work now.. it did for me.

Fyi, I am using Win 7 Pro 32 bit.

I had similar problem with the "Desktop\*.pdf":

Please refer to the original post by Johnathan Lyman above.

Replace Step 9 with:
9a. Go to Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers
9b. Right click "Adobe PDF Converter" > Printer Properties
9c. Go to tab "Ports"
9d. [Add Port...] > [New Port Type...] > [Browse...] (to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF (or wherever you have Acrobat installed))
9e. Select "Adobe PDF.inf" > [Open] > [OK]
9f. [New Port...] > [Close]
9g. If you don't see the "Desktop\*.pdf" in the list, close all windows
9h. Reopen Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers
9i. Right click "Adobe PDF Converter" > Printer Properties
9j. Go to tab "Ports"
9k. You should see "Desktop\*.pdf" in the list, check on it

Then, continue the step 10-11 of the original post by Johnathan Lyman.

Thank you Jonathan Lyman, your post really helped me :) So much that I decided to register just to give back and thank you.

It worked for me after following above steps and running Adobe Acrobat update by going to "Help" Check Updates

Thanks for the above steps!

This worked for me!

Per an earlier forum, I extracted adobePDF.dll_64 to my desktop before i did this. It is in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard/Data1 folder on the Adobe CD.

If you have an Adobe PDF Printer installed, "Right Click" and "Remove Device" before moving forward. Leaving the old device will only conflict with the new install.

1) Devices and Printers
2) Add Printer
3) Choose a printer port ( Create a new port)( Local Port)
4) Name your port ( I named mine Adobe PDF Printer)
5) Install the print driver (Adobe) (Adobe PDF Converter 8.6.0.0
6) Use current driver
7) Name your printer
8) Do not share
9) Finish

RIght click on Adobe PDF Printer

Printer properties BEFORE printer preferences

1) Ports ( Select the "Adobe PDF Printer" port you just created)
2) Apply
3) OK

Printer Preferences

1)Adobe PDF Folder ( Select Adobe PDF Printer)
2) UNCHECK "Do not send fonts to adobe PDF
3) Apply
4) OK

I have to rotate the final doc 90 clockwise, but at least it works now!

I hope this helps someone!

create port

aeyeball, if the port is not listed under the "use following port" you will need to create the port in the "create new port" area. we can help you with that too if need be.

Thanks, JL, your suggestion still rocks on Windows 7 Pro with MSO2007 Basic using Adobe Acrobat 8.0!!!!

Was a little confused at line 4 but just decided to ignore the suggestion to "change the port to "Desktop \*.pdf" (Adobe PDF Port)". Instead, I just clicked NEXT, then (at the "Install the printer driver" prompt box) selected Have Disk and kept on with the rest of your suggestions (5 on). Presto, I could see Adobe Acrobat PDF Conversion as my printer.

I still don't see the PDF ICONS in any MSO programs though. Will continue to look for this solution. Thanks again.

Just an aside here but Adobe Acrobat 8.x reached its end of support a lttle over a year ago. Continuing to use it could present security risks.
