Could've sworn I saw a 970 for under 200 or around 220 yesterday... The cheapest one I found was a 960 for about $180. Are 960s still relevant or should I fork up the extra for the 970? I'm a bit impatient but I think I could wait for price drops on 970+. I do trust Newegg.

Man those prices are steep but if I want good performance I'm gonna need one. The SSC card is only a pinch more, so I could scoop one up if I can convince my mom to let me spend that much on it. And then there's this power supply, 850w, under 170.
But then there's this one that's even less but from NCIXUS. I had issues with them when I was buying my initial parts because my CPU was the first thing I ordered, but the last part to arrive, and it had express priority.

My current PSU is an EVGA and haven't had any issues with it, so I'm willing to go with that. Good thing it's cheaper than the Corsair and has a 6+2 pin PCIe, the 970 would need it.

Hi,
Not only price wise which Corsair's are simply overpriced is the bottom line,
You mention the wiring to the gpu yes but one more thing is how it's wired
Corsair's uses a skimpy pig tail for the +2 on it and evga is a totally separate wire from for the +2
Another example is cpu power
EVGA's cpu power cable is split 4+4
Corsair's are 8 and that's it
Now that might be a wild one but I do have a 4 pin cpu actually my x99 board has a 8 pin plug and a 4 pin plug so on a Corsair psu cable set I would have to cut or modify the second cpu cable to use 4 pin plug
I did not see any break part on the plug to do that easily.
I rma'ed a RM850 because of that plus it just looked like a piece of junk very cheap.
I got a 850 P2 instead.

If you are on a tight budget then the GTX 750 Ti is cheap and may be all you need. I'd look at spending some extra cash on an SSD and then you could probably get away with 120GB. Your PSU seems to meet your power requirements. If your current PSU is a cheap brand then maybe upgrade to a name brand. I've used Seasonic, Antec, Thermaltake and Corsair and think they all seem pretty good. A modular PSU may be neater but you pay for it.
I'm not an AMD user but your CPU is pretty basic so I wouldn't over capitalize on your system.

I'm willing to spend the extra for a 970, it's just a matter of transferring the funds to my checking and calling the bank to temporarily raise my spending limit. (normally I can only spend $200 per 24 hour period)

Yep good list
I sent a RM 850 back Chicony Power piece of junk.
Although I just hated the cables the unit it's self was a lot less weight than the 850P2 Super flower which the cables were perfect

I also set my Newegg wishlist to email me if any of my items go on sale, which there are at least three different 970s in there. hoping at least one does before then. If not, my best bet is Black Friday. And then Christmas.

Okay, dumb question time. What's the difference between an ATX and an ATX12V power supply, if anything?
