is it stuck at 600 x 800 or similar?
If it is then you need to install the display adaptor (Graphics card) drivers.
Let us know what model of Dell you have and we will help you out.

That model of dell was not intended to work with windows 7 however,

Try this first

click on start
click on control panel
click on appearance and personalization
click on display
click on screen resolution
click on advanced settings
click on list all modes,

If this does not work try this next

click on start
click on control panel
click on device manager
click on display adaptors
this will expand, double click on what it expands to and click on the driver tab.
click on update driver.

If this fails to sort out the problem;

Have a look at this website
Windows7 Dell Dimension 2400: Installing Windows 7 on Dell Dimension 2400

near the bottom of the page it will tell you how to install your graphics driver.

Thank you for your help, unfortunately had a set back in my attempts. I went to restart my PC and when it powers back up, it goes to a black screen reading "F1 to reboot or F2 to go to set up screen" (not exact phrase). Will attempt to reformat again and try your suggestions.
