All USB controllers/devices not finding drivers

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, all of a sudden windows was not able to add any new USB devices. I went into device manager and removed some devices and then tried to scan for them. For the first little while it would add some back but not others. I tried to reboot into safe mode and found that a brand new keyboard that had never been used on that system would work in a USB 3.0 port only but no other ports worked. I then removed all USB devices to have it redetect them all... well there went the one keyboard that I had.

I booted off a livecd and into the bios and everything works just fine.

I booted into recovery mode and loaded the registry, I removed all devices from the ENUM/USB. I rebooted the computer and was able to login with the keyboard and mouse... Hurray... nope soon as windows started to load the drivers I lost all USB. I figure there is a corrupt driver in there somewhere.

The only way I am able to access the system is via RDP. I'm glad I left that on for some reason. I do not have windows recovery enabled so that is out of the question.

Delete Driver

When you removed your USB devices, did you select "Delete the driver software for this device" as well?

yes, I make sure that if I get the option to check the box I do.

It seems like no matter what I plug in, USB2 or USB3, that it's not actually comparing the vid/pid to what's already installed. I can clearly copy the vid/pid and past it into google and find the drivers. I have them all installed and also stored in a drivers folder but it won't find them when I point to that folder.

As it happens, I was searching for a USB controller driver a couple of weeks ago.

I found that the PID/VID info was totally useless.
Google searches returned multiple companies and multiple unrelated devices (i.e. not limited USB controllers).

In my case, my motherboard USB3 controller was conflicting with the new USB3 expansion card driver.
I completely uninstalled the motherboard controller and after a couple of restarts Windows fixed itself.

Have you tried running System File Checker just in case there are broken system files causing your issues?

Understood, I only have the onboard USB2 and USB3 controllers. I can go through and try to remove them from device manager but they I am not sure where the files will be stored.

I have run sfc and "nothing" is wrong.

You could download a program like Double Driver and backup your drivers in a location of your choosing.

You might also run a few quick malware utilities:

1. Old Timer-Temp File Cleaner
   Restart your machine in case there are any system operations pending

   :warn:Save your work and close all open windows.
   TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!

2. AdwCleaner by xplode
   Follow the Download, Scan, and Clean steps in this tutorial on the author's site: How to use AdwCleaner version 3.x
   
   Malware is often difficult to erradicate - it is even more difficult if more than one path is taken on different sites.
   
   As you have posted the issue here on SevenForums, also post any logs here on SevenForums
   - not on the General Changelog Team (GCT) site. SevenForums members might ask you to launch other on-demand scanners that are not familiar to GCT.
   
   When your system is clean of malware, launch AdwCleaner a final time and click the Uninstall button.​

If your machine still exhibits the issue, you're going to have to look at the Event logs.

Since it isn't clear what is causing the issue - look in the System log first, sort by level.

Slartybart, I ran MalwareBytes, TFC, and followed the link and use AdwCleaner. There were a couple of minor things that were cleaned but otherwise nothing to major.

I have been doing some looking through the log but I'm not sure about most of it, I'll look more when I get home from work and will also try and copy some things that stand out here.

Good news on the malware front.

Yeah, the event logs can be cryptic

If you export the system log and attach it, I can load it locally on my machine to lend another pair of eyes. You'll need to place it in a zip folder to attach it (.EVT is not a valid extension for the forum upload):

I found some "Windows Error Reporting" from the Application log when i was trying to install the drivers.

I didn't see where you said that you ran DriveCleanup (1st line in post 8)

If you did not see it, please run that now, restart and see if things improve on the USB issue.

I'll look at the event logs you posted.

I'm sorry, I didn't even see that. I am running check disk right now, it paused on a section for awhile but is chugging away just fine right now. I will run DriveCleanup as soon as the checkdisk is done.

There were a few things in the application logs that suggest a course of action.

1) Uninstall Kraken

2) Clear out your %TEMP% folder

restart the machine - anything working?

No, try creating a new user profile and logging in with that ID.

I have to look at the system log, so let me know if I can stop looking at logs

Ok, finished trying all of those and no change.

Ran drivecleanup, rebooted
Ran the microsoft fix, rebooted
Uninstalled Kraken
Booted into safe mode and cleaned the files in %TEMP% that I couldn't remove in normal mode.

Launch System Configuration (msconfig)

Services tab:

Hide all Microsoft services
Press the [Disable All] button​

Startup tab: Press the [Disable All] button

save and restart

For the remainder of these exercises, restart the machine after you complete a suggestion

completed, no change on the usb driver front.

The USB controllers are showing up as "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller". I tried to install a freshly extracted version of the drivers but I get the same error, "The system cannot find the file specified".
