Solved animated gifs and windows photo viewer

I wanted to ask corgano or anyone else, if they could upload the gifview.exe somewhere again because when I try to download it, it says the file has been removed and I can't find it anywhere else.

spped up Gifs

Hey I downloaded the gifs viewer and all my gifs are slower than what they were before. Do you know how to speed them up?

UPDATED SOLUTION
Goofware decided to take the windows XP image viewer, wrap it in an installer, and release it as a patch, but did a sloppy with his reg work so it did not work on my system where D is the main disk. What could I do? I went over it and re-wrote it from scratch! Notes in source (as always) and a compiled below for download.

His site was goofwear.com, therefore he called himself goof before I did. I wasn't trying to insult him.

I wasn't too harsh, and said nothing false. I know why he did it the way he did - he used the simplest approach. But sometimes the simplest approach isn't the best one.

rework it without asking if he minded.

If no one ever tried to fix or improve other's work, innovation wouldn't happen. If he (or anyone) takes time to look, they could learn two things from my code:
1: Using REG_EXPAND_SZ lets you put environment variables in the values
2: For setting program compatibility programmatically the key HKEY_LOCAL_MECHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers will be most useful

Found a minor spelling error, preventing it from setting compatibility (Derp) - Fixed

The only reason I did it in the first place is because I had some gifs to view and his installer wouldn't work on my computer. I run my computer from my D drive but his installer relies on it being on C:

Is there a chance this small file could be made to work in Vista? There's no animated gif support there either!

It should work in windows vista as well as 8. It hasn't been tested, but give it a try and let me know
If it doesn't work for any reason, run the installer again and it'll ask you to uninstall.

You're a splendid fellow but your re-working won't work on my Windows 7 pro, 64bit machine!

When trying to load a .gif or .jpg (after changing the associations) I just get:
"Error loading C:\Windows\gif\shimgvw.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed."

I have got the original gifviewer which does work on gifs. I have tried uninstalling the new (xp) program and reinstalling but to no avail - any suggestions?

Incidentally, in "set associations", .gif is revealed as a TIF Image in the description?

I was really happy to find out about your nice work, and did as instructed for the file association, however just as diddad has reported it doesn't work for me, I get the same error message. Now:

Set the .dll in compatibility mode to "Vista" and all works beautifully!

I'm afraid I dunno how to do that, and I got a little confused when I googled it. I figured it'd be simple to simply ask you in this post ^_^

How does one set the .dll in compatibility mode to "Vista" as to see all gifs beautifully?

Xavier, setting the compatibility mode is pretty simple. The "tl;dr" at the bottom is probably enough if you want to skip the paragraph.

After you've installed the program, go to the drive windows is installed on your computer (usually C:\). After that, open the "Windows" folder and then the "gif" folder. Inside the "gif" folder you should see rundll32.exe (or rundll32 if you don't have file extensions shown) and shimgvw.dll (or shimgvw). Right click on rundll32 and go to properties. The second tab on the top should be "compatibility". At the top there should be a check box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". Check the box, and in the drop down box directly below it, select "Windows Vista" (doesn't matter which Windows Vista, they all work). And you're done!

Works with Windows8

I was searching for something to make GIFs work in windows 8 without additional software. And I can confirm that this works for windows 8 Pro x64, just had to run the file in "c:/windows/gif" in vista compatibility mode. Thank you much.
