Another Windows 7 freeze/lockup

Hi all,

I made the decision to upgrade my OS from XP SP3 (32bit) to Windows 7 last week and bought the upgrade disk, making sure that I downloaded the idiots' guide and read into how to install the new OS.

Funnily enough things when awry and I had difficulty installing the 32 bit version as I kept getting crashes after about 90% of the installation process was complete. I took the computer back to the manufacturer and they installed the 64 bit version of Windows 7 after having the same difficulties as I experienced.

The problem is that after startup things look ok, but after about 3 minutes the computer freezes - no BSOD, just can't move the keyboard, mouse or do anything elses.

I've gradually updated all of my drivers via Safe Mode with networking (and Driver Detective), having the most difficulty in replacing my Mass Storage Controller driver. My 1TB drive (not the OS drive) is coming up as unpartitioned too, which is a shame as it has my iTunes library on it! (not to worry as I can recover this from either the drive or my iPod after I resolve the freezes).

I've spent 36 hours trying to figure out what is causing the crashes to no avail, and would appreciate any advice. I have attached the SF Diagnostic Tool readout for guidance. Safe mode works a treat - but something goes horribly wrong in normal mode. Not related to overheating imo as I changed the PSU last year and have never had any issues with heat.

Hello Mark,

I didn't see the SF Diag attachment could you attach it again ?? If Safe Mode is working fine that i guess it's something in the Startup that is messing things up. Follow this link Run Selective Startup using System Configuration and reboot the System in Selective Startup and see whether that cures your problem.

SafeMode also only uses a limited driver set so that your problem could possible be related to a driver problem.

However, as the Capt' mentioned somehow we missed the SF diagnostic output.

Where can I find the updates for the drivers you list? ie do I need to go to the manufacturer of a) the motherboard (Foxconn) b) the chipset (Intel) or c) the device (Samsung)? I downloaded the 2005 ITE RAID driver as this was the only way that I could solve the Mass Storage Controller yellow exclamation mark when W7 was installed (the driver on the motherboard disc provided with the computer did not have a recognised digital signature, and would have been 2005 anyway). I take it that these refer to the hard disk controllers?

BitDefender is no longer on this machine and I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Worth mentioning too that I have tried the selective startup but cannot determine which service or services are causing the problems; if I restart from Safe mode with the same number of services enabled the computer crashes anyway, a baffling experience as all that seems to be different is the W7 background!
