Apple Chose To Download Updates..

..Even when apparently there wasn't enough space on my disk? Wtf?

One update about 87 MB, another for 30, and 40...then another for like 10, adding up to be nearly 200 MB.

Yet I checked my disk space at the start of the download and it was in the 400's...yet there was an error downloading the updates? And I would think it would be the disk space seeing as, for some idiotic reason, even while in the middle of downloading less than 200MB worth of space I clicked on C: properties and it said it had like 70MB left!!! How the crap can this be true? The sum of all the updates did not even exceed 200 and I read the remaining space beforehand and it said over 400.

Nevermind, just the fact Apple Software Update decided to go ahead without some kind of mechanism telling beforehand if the disk will hold it is retarded. Usually when anything is about to be downloaded you get informed if it'll fit or not but the updates were being installed even when apparently I was running out of disk space...

Who knows what may have happened now...I guess it just got cancelled or something. Anyway does anyone know how I can get it back in the future? I mean re-install those same updates...

And, why are the updates this big? It says it was installing iTunes and Quicktimes, yet, I already have these programs, so does that mean it's just installing a newer one or updated one?

By the way, this would be on my Windows XP Professional desktop computer. This was the typical Apple Software Updater that usually lists iTunes+Quicktime, things like MobileMe, and so forth.

I'm sure there were 4 things being downloaded, the biggest one was around 80 MB, and this was "iTunes+Quicktime".

I think another one was MobileMe, but I'm not sure. The window is gone so I can't tell.

When it couldn't finish the install obviously, an error message appeared saying there was an error with the installation (even though apparently some of it got finished...because near the start menu it says new programs have been installed...what programs I wonder, since I have long had iTunes and Quicktime on my computer yet the Start Menu highlights THEM as new...maybe new versions? I would guess so).

Anyway the error message said something failed, and said that I, at any time, can go somewhere (I guess Apple or Quicktime...don't remember) and go to "TOOLS" and then something else. I barely remember that message but I know for a fact it said look under "Tools" somewhere to get whatever I missed back in the future. Anyone know what it's talking about? I mean, I don't think it's the "Search for Updates" in iTunes since it says my iTunes is up to date, nor do I think it's the "search for updates" in quicktime either...........

Maybe it means "Apple Update Software"....though when I click on that...it does a little check, and says everything is up to date. How this is possible I have no idea. After all, something about the last update/installation FAILED, so there's no way everything is just all of a sudden perfect...

Woah...for a second there I thought that was uploaded today, but it's from 08.

I mean I don't mind so much the extra software, as long as I have Quicktime and iTunes updates I'm ok...it's just...that I would like to KNOW if something's going to fit on my hard disk before it starts to get installed/downloaded...know what I mean? That way no weird sort of crash is going to happen.

Anyway Lomai, typically, what happens when an update of any sort is being installed, say it's 50 MB, and you have 45 MB of hard disc space left, and this thing is being installed. Obviously it will not finish, and will halt when it used up all the space, and there will be an error, but would all this be just as if you never downloaded it in the first place? Does the download just cancel completely or do you get a half-ass download if that makes sense?

Sorry for the old link - wanted to provide you with some background on the same.
Appears that some users are having the same issue as you and that different workarounds seem to fix some of those.
Have a look at the following threads:

The links above are not solutions but some users have listed some steps that they took to resolve the issue - the most ideal would be to download the full app via your browser and then installing it rather than trying via the software update process.
Be sure to create a restore point before proceeding further

The available space problem on data media is not a new one - though with today's cheap gigabytes of space, it's not one you see often.

Due to the way that computers tend to operate when downloading, where they actually download to a temporary file, copy to the actual download filename, and then delete the temp file, it is often required that you have at least twice the reported filesize available to actually download.

This used to be a major issue in the days of floppy disks. where there was also the issue of format of the data storage involved. - a file that is 1MB on one media (Hard Drive), could take up more or less on another media, (floppy),.

This can also occur on hard drives due to different sector and block sizes on different drives
