Hi Friends

My fist build here. I wanted to think about buying a asus z170 mobo or similar. I read where the install process for installing w7 will stop and deactivate usb ports at one point of the install. because of no drivers for this board. . I think I have been there before.

My wonder here is ... Can I take a functional windows 7 HDD from my slow AMD computer and plug into a new mobo build. Would it boot and give me a GUI access to the desktop to install needed ASUS drivers etc....

Thx guys and gals.

Unlikely, unless you adjust it to boot on new hardware.

There is an Asus tool to add drivers to the installation media

EZ Installer | ASUS Global

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/Utility/SW_EZ_Installer_W7_32_64_VER10321_20180503R.zip

Gigabyte also do several:

I had thought about the difficulty to get the drivers installed. But it would be on the install of a new HDD... I wonder if...hmmmm... The drivers would be loaded on the new HDD . If added my older w7 drive as a second drive I could not use the old drive as a primary boot. since it would not have the drivers. Could the softwares on that old drive still function? that would save me money.

You can use the old disk as SIW2 has showed.
Personally I think it is a bad idea. The new MB has a complete different hardware that requires new drivers. And old installations has a lot of trash on it.

I strongly recommend a clean install. To do it you must add the USB and SATA drivers to the win 7 installation disk.
SIW2 also gave you the ASUS tool link. https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/Utility/SW_EZ_Installer_W7_32_64_VER10321_20180503R.zip

SIW2 also made his own tool - Update your Win 7 installation media.

Personally I think it is a bad idea.

I have never had an issue doing it. The OP specifically said he doesn't want to reinstall his programs.

Though I agree a clean install every so often is not a bad idea to get rid of crud - provided you are able to reinstall everything, and have all the license keys, etc. Many people don't have all that to hand, or can't be bothered with the time.

The OS I am currently booted into was transferred from another machine.

Thank you megahertz and SWI2

Yes I was hoping to find a newer used or old stock mobo that was faster than my 2oo mhz FSB front side bus / 667 hzz ddr2 speed board. dual core amd. hopefully make a re used of my 7200 rpm old drive and w7. But I keep finding the asua and gigabite type z170 etcs to have this driver issue. I don't want w10 and would not wish to rebuild. Just trying get away from this old board. and ideas?

how much longer on the free software offer you think?

If you get it now - then get it to create the boot media, you can use the boot media forever.

What driver issue? Moving win7 to any different motherboard will almost always require "adjust to new hardware. It isn't specific to z170.

I am currently using an ivybridge board. It works well with a quad core cpu and ddr3 ram. They can picked up cheaply second hand. H77, Z77, or B75 chipsets.

In the UK, a ga b75m-d3h, plus 2x4gb ddr3 ram, plus an ivybridge quadcore can be had for around $110. It should fit any standard case , or mini atx case, and uses standard power supply.

Just to throw this in, I just this week used the Asus EZ Installer to create a Win7 USB installation disk, and it worked just fine on an Asus Z170M-Plus. The issue is, I believe, that without the drivers you lose your USB keyboard and mouse during the installation. I have PS/2 stuff so don't even know if it was necessary to do anything special. In any case, no problems with the installation.

On the other hand, I've had a lot of success trying an old drive and OS in a new machine, I'd say give it a try and see if it works. If it does boot, I'd make sure to then install all the motherboard and other hardware drivers.

Well To continue my struggle I have used the Asus EZinstaller tool to slipstream the so called correct drivers to my creation of a new USB bootable ISO . But when using the usb the end result is that the windows process cannot find the drive. no matter how many attempts i make. I even load the drivers from another usb souce . get windows to see the file attempt to load and then fail with a error clain I need to use the latest ACHI drivers from the manufacturer. WHICH I AM USING ug!!

I get the same error with windows 10 ! that should not happen?

I have used my Parted magic testing software and read and scanned the sectors on the drive no problems and passes!

so now my question is can I buy a M.2 drive and will that make a "go around" on this problem. is the M.2 using the same needed drivers ?

I don't know why you don't try what jagurdo said in post #9. Here is all there is to it:

1) On old system, go into device manager > IDA ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click your disk controller listed within that section, right click and select "update driver software", then click "browse my computer for software", then "let me pick from a list...". then choose "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA controller", then click next to install it.
2) After it installs, IMMEDIATELY shut down, remove the drive and connect it to your new motherboard.
3) Boot up, first checking to make sure bios of new motherboard has AHCI selected for SATA Contoller (its usually set to AHCI by default)
4) It will boot to the desktop and you will need to then install the new motherboard's chipset drivers (intel management interface), usb 3.0 drivers, vga drivers, etc. Your 2.0 usb ports will work already so there is no loss of keyboard/mouse
5) Once all drivers are loaded, run freeware "Device Cleanup Tool" which deletes all old drivers from your system (for anything NOT currently connected). Here's the link
Tools for Windows
6) Run windows update

Hi johnhoh

I have to thank you and "jagurdo" both for finding the solution for me . I owe you both a couple beers. For the life of me I could not get the drivers slip steamed in to a w7 iso or make the w10 disk install work , I was ready to throw away a 250 buck investment in used equipment . The solution to moving the old hard drive with your modification by using the existing drivers in the device drivers tool worked. But I had lots of trouble with getting the new drivers installed in the new system. Including locking out of all of my usb ports.

Anyway with that now all corrected I am sending to you on my new machine. My last question is this ....

The old donor computer ..well i just figured I had a new HDD sitting around why not just install w7 on that as a back up unit. The donor is now having the same trouble that started this tread in the first place. the donor will not read or boot a w7 media install disk on DVD or USb. Bios sees the WDC western digital drive but get the following error on three dvds and two usbs.

Boot MGR Missing.

Crtl alt del. to restart

etc.

i did then format the drive NTFS I think but that would not make a difference to the optical drive media.
There is no Boot file a on a blank Hdd.

When I then load defaults on the Bios I will then get a new error ...

yes...set sata to ACHI mode for me.
no....do not show this message again

key .. press any key to continue...

I make all three attempts and the same bootMGR failure.

I can run my Ultr-x cd test software in the CD optical and it runs fine passes all equipment.

So I am perplexed. Any ideas?
