ATI HD Sound "not plugged in"

Hello.

I just installed Windows 7 on my computer and I'm trying to figure out what's going on. I've been searching for hours and can't find an answer.

All I know about my motherboard is that the company is ASUS and it has built in sound. It also has built in video, but I upgraded it to an ATI Radeon 4550 before I upgraded to Windows 7. I did a clean install for W7 after having XP for a good number of years.

When I installed W7 my sound simply did not work. I'm 100% sure it's the driver but I can't figure out what driver I need. I'm not sure how to detect all the relevant hardware on my computer and I don't remember all the specs.

Can someone help me figure this out?

The ATI HD sound is refering to its HDMI output. this is only needed if you are using a HDMi cable and wanting to it to carry both video AND audio to the device (HDTV for example)

this will work if your monitor has HDMI inputs and built in speakers as well.


If your wanting to use onboard sound:

on the task bar in bottom right corner, r/click the volume icon and choose:
Playback Devices
Set your speakers to default. (Realtek or what ever they are)


if all you have is the ATI HDMI option, then you need to get your sound card drivers.

To do that, 1st Try:
Go into Device manager
<<to do so--> Click Start// R-click my Computer// choose Properties // Click on Device manager --> in top left of Window that pops up>>

look for any Yellow Exclamation marks
(may have one referencing Audio device)
It may also be listed under Sound,Video, and game controllers
If so, right click and choose update driver ... and automatically online


If Windows cant find the drivers for you, you will need to look around and find out a little more about your motherboard so that we can help you locate the proper sound drivers you need.

other options;
1.They should be on a cd that came with your motherboard (although these may not be compatable with Win7)
2. Download them from ASUS
(youll need to know exactly what kind of motherboard you have)
3.From Realtek if you have Realtek Audio
Will need more info about your motherboard however

You may also need to disable your onboard video in the bios if you havent after installing the 4550.

Delete the Hardware and ReScan

FYI: I was having the "AUDIO Not Plugged IN" problem on my SONY VGN-FW139E when directly plugged into a "Newer" tv. Sound used to work and then stopped.

The problem kicked in around when I installed Windows 7.

I fixed it by deleting the Audio HDMI device from hardware and then scan for new hardware. I could then click it in hardware/sound and set as default.

Hey everyone. I fixed the problem. Thanks for the help.

The reason I couldn't figure this out was because I completely neglected to look for and install the motherboard files.

Here's how I did it for future reference:

1. I checked what kind of motherboard I had using CPU-Z. It was ASUS Socket 775 P5L-MX. I initially couldn't find the file I needed through the link provided by sipple.

2. So I searched for Socket 775 P5L-MX on the search bar on the right hand side and installed the chipset and audio driver.

3. The driver wasn't available for Windows 7 so I decided to try to Vista driver and it worked.

4. In order to get it to work I used the "Setup" app instead of the "AsusSetup" (AsusSetup told me it wasn't compatible with my operating system.
