That's real bad news Jmm. Your HDD is failing:(

Create a system image backup to backup and clone this HDD to another HDD now while you still are able to so you will be able to do a system image recovery to the new HDD to have everything back like it was when the image was created.

If it's still under warranty, then you should consider setting up a RMA with your computer manufacturer, or to WD at the link below to get it replaced.

How to get an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) or replace a defective product under warranty

the machine is 3.5 years old (is that an expected lifetime for a hdd?) - i had already done both c:\ backup and drive image last week...
should i try running the dos version of lifeguard (wd's site says is has better chances to repair than the windows version)?
i just reset timeout to 4 secs and chkdsk started fine on reboot... am totally lost... can disk failure explain all that mess?
if the hdd does die, i'd rather get a new machine...

A HDD could last a long time, or could fail not long after buying it. It just depends on wear and tear, and if it had any damage or defects or not.

It wouldn't hurt to run the dos version, but I suspect you'll probably get the same results.

Yes, drive failure could cause this and much more when it's about to die. Probably soon.

yes, the last chkdsk log is even worse!
will do a few more "things", but am basically out for shopping now...
in case you have any fav to recommend, my wish list includes 4-gb ram, >2.2 ghz, 12' monitor, 3g/umts, bluetooth and hdmi-out (all of this of course in addition to the "basics") - but the thing is, i need a french keyboard, so i might try to order from canada (am in the usa until the end of the month, then back to europe)...
brink, you've been extrrrremely helpful, thanks so much, and i've learned a lot!

Unless you just want a new system, all you need is to get a new 2.5" HDD to replace that bad one with.

(In case anyone else wants to know) That's because you have one already. You need to go to windows, system32, find autocheck and delete it, or rename it like autocheck old. Then download the file below and extract it on desktop or directly in c:/windows/ system32 or manually move it from Desktop. Now you need to play with the permissions by right click, properties and grant yourself Full control. Its totally doable. Don't give up.
