Avoiding the Windows 10 Update Bully with Windows 7 Updates

I reckon they are going to get us all in the end - we seem to be spending as much time avoiding the wretched OS as we do doing things we like doing, but I am sure it will come down to nought and they will get thrie rotten way and worst part will hav eot pay for it.

Ah well there is still the old snail mail and phone I suppose.

I've been using Windows since v3.1 and I'm becoming very flummoxed by all of this GWX silliness. I've decided to uninstall the 12/08/15 updates and once again get rid of the newly propagated GWX folders/files. Then, I will install each of the updates individually, check for the GWX proliferation, and proceed from there. (lather, rinse, repeat). When I was working in this profession, I ate, drank, & slept this stuff, but now it's all just a bother of someone else' making. It is taking way too much time to maintain this system, but W10 seems to be just as big a hemorrhoid. Seriously considering some form of Linux (which I've worked with) as an alternative in the future.

KB3035583 just showed up yesterday morning all by itself in WU as an important update. Of course I hid it and it shows in the hidden list as recommended.

Just out of curiosity, do you have the recommended box checked or unchecked?



It showed up for me as recommended because I have that box unchecked.

Yes, I have the recommended box checked. WU listed 5583 as an important update. Are you saying that all updates will show up as important if the recommended box is checked. In the past, I've had updates listed both ways in an update list in WU.

Interesting. I thought it meant to notify me of recommended updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them like the important updates. I didn't think recommended updates would be marked as important. Thanks.

Yeah, unchecking that box will keep it in the optional section instead of important like you saw it earlier.

I believe the point was to ignore the optional section and focus more on the real Important updates.
But if you want these recommended updates mixed up in the important section feel free

Nothing wrong with that either, as long as you don't have it on automatic. I was just explaining why they get put in with important with a recommended listing like you mentioned here,

I have been using the Windows 7, 8.1 enable or disable from the 10 Forums, to disable Win 10 upgrade but I found that little Windows GWX frame has reappeared again in area that you normally access via that little arrow over on the right of the task bar.

A quick look in my C drive in the Windows folder under System 32 sure enough showed the damned GWX folder there. I tried to delete it, but it's locked, so I right clicked on it & selected Properties & it showed that it was installed on the 16th Dec.. So a quick check of Windows Installed Updates showed KB3035583 as being the culprit as it was the only one installed on that day.

So I uninstalled it, the computer restarted & then checked the Windows folder under System 32 in C drive & the GWX folder has gone.
I then checked for updates & sure enough KB3035583 came through again, so hid it.

That enable or disable is a different thing, it doesn't get rid of GWX. It just sets a policy to either enable or disable OS upgrades through windows update.

I still have the GWX and all the upgrade related updates installed and I haven't seen any forcing or otherwise unwanted or unintended behavior yet.

FWIW, I discovered 16 GWX folders/files on my system after the 12/08/15 updates. Stupid me, 4 were dated 04/04/15 and 12 were dated 03/24/15. The 04/04 entries were owned by "System" and the 03/24 entries were owned by "Trusted Installer". I got rid of them with Brinks "Take Ownership Shortcut" tutorial (many thank yous) after I uninstalled the 12/08/15 updates. 5583 was not one of them as it has been hidden since it was first issued. I'm still getting the GWX key in the registry after every cold boot, but it's always empty or has no value set. I'm going to add the 12/08/15 updates back one at a time to see if any GWX folders/files show up after each install.

I get updates like everyone one else but nothing persistently trying to actually do anything.

Seriously considering some form of Linux (which I've worked with) as an alternative in the future.

Well I posted in the 10 forum yesterday re using Thunderbird as an alternative email because of this really annoying crap and I got no real answers and some flack for worrying about what I consider my own very personal details and data - including medical info as I am not so sure it could not be accessed by the firm for whatever reason and I do not want my stuff brought up to be seen by anyone but myself and my physicians.
One of th epsosters in my thread there was really quite blaise' about using 10 and I think that sort of attitude is furthering M$'s efforts to get us all to use 10.

Anyway soon when I get a chance I am going to boot a Ubuntu system see what happens because I have used it a tiny bit in the past and it really wasn't that bad.

Yep one has to be only positive about 10 otherwise the trolls are set loose in gangs usually they offer no solutions only insults... and it's forum sanctioned attacks.
