Backup error: Server execution failed (0x80080005)

When I click on Manage Space, about 45 seconds go by and then a little box appears with Manage Windows Backup disk space displayed at the top of the box and "Server execution failed (0x80080005)" appears.

When I click on OK, Manage Windows Backup disk space appears and under Backup location: It says The backup location is not connected. It has the word Browse under it underlined and in blue (click-able) and when I click on it, my F: drive contents appears (1TB Fantom drive) folders and everything.
My F: drive also appears under Backup Location on Backup and Restore as normal.

This may have something to do with it, but I do not know how.
I have defraggler scheduled to defragment C: drive at 4 AM every day and it never
gets it below 15 or 17 percent fragmentation. This is because System Volume Information does not defragment. While searching for solutions I came across a Microsoft XP solution that said take ownership of System Volume Information.
So I logged in as Administrator and did exactly that and tried to defragment again.
It did not help, so I set it back (I had just added Administrator to Security Permissions with full control.) then I went back in and deleted Administrator from the permissions.

Well I restored the system to 2 days ago, which is as far as I could go.
I don't know what's up with that - 4 restore points that span 2 days!
I should have more than that one would think.

Anyway, It still got the exact same error doing the exact same thing mentioned above.
"Server execution failed (0x80080005)".
Before today I was able to see 3 or 4 backup sets by clicking on Manage Space, but not anymore. I just get the error.

I triggered a backup and it is running...
It finished successfully, but I still get the afore mentioned error.

This just became critical because I logged in as Administrator and brought up Backup and Restore,
clicked on Create a System Image and I received the error “The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005).” I was going to start over and see if this error would go away by doing that. But, I do not want to delete my one system image if I am not going to be able to create another one.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think the important part of this is that after I click on Manage Space on Backup and Restore, and get the error, the Manage Windows Backup disk space window does open up, but it says "The backup location is not connected" under Backup location.

But, yet when I click on the Browse button it brings up my F: drive where I backup to.

At this point, I can click on View Backups and see the 5 sets of backups that are there.

The problem lies in that W7 does not see the drive being connected even though it is.
When I click on Close to close that window I get the error again.

I did look in Services and noticed that Volume Shadow Copy was not running even though it was set to Automatic and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider was also stopped and it was set to manual. I changed it to Auto and started them both, but still get this error :(

have you considered using a different backup program??? Acronis True Image Home 2010 and Macrium Reflect are very popular here and both work flawlessly with Windows 7...

No, I went through that with this other (resolved) thread I started with another windows 7 backup error in this forum.

http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/46842-backup-fails-error-0x8007007b.html

Windows 7 is advertised to backup your files and I am one that considers that as good as a promise.
And I expect it to work without shelling out money for 3rd party software.

My daily backup works just fine without any errors, it is just the situation described above that gives me the error.
I cannot create another system image as described above. And please don't even mention "doing a fresh install" as
that was mentioned on the other thread too, and I am unwilling to go to the great lengths required to do another
fresh install.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

I would hope that this is not the final solution for my problem. :sarc:

Acronis True Image Home 2010 has some bad reviews and I do not think it does incremental backups.

Macrium Reflect version was just released 8 days ago, not sure about that one.

I paid good money for Windows 7 Home Premium and it comes advertised as able to backup and restore your system. I do not think suggesting that I use third party software is a solution to my problem. I consider that to be evading the issue

I would bet that computersplus could figure this one out. He figured out the cause for the other backup problem.

Hopefully he can step in and restore some civility to Windows 7 as he did before.
Meanwhile I will keep searching for a solution on my own and if I find one I will post it here. I will also continue posting updates to this thread until it is the #1 result on Google for this error.

I want to be able to help other Windows 7 users that encounter this error find their solution by "Googling it".

I would disconnect the USB drive and reboot plug the drive back in and let Windows redetect it and see if it then shows up as for normally

as for defragging Defraggler is ok but not great in order to defrag system files which are locked you need a defragger that is capable of a boot time defrag that is the only time locked system files can be defraged you might try Puran Puran Software - Quality First

You may also want to try this

Insert your OS Disc

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands at a command prompt. Press ENTER after you type each command.

cd /d %windir%\system32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Note The last command may not run successfully.
Perform a backup operation to verify that the issue is resolved.

Thanks computersplus! I already disconnected and reconnected the USB drive I was backing up to.
I also downloaded the Puran free software (I love free).

I was in the process of doing the commands you listed and I got an error.

When I entered "regsvr32 /i swprv.dll"
I got a box popup with RegSvr32 in the title of the box and it displays this in the box with an OK button:

Code:
The module "swprv.dll" was loaded but the call to
DLLRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070715.

For more information about this problem, search
online using the error code as a search term.
Should I just continue on?
(Thanks for your help by the way!)

These three got errors, but the rest went ok:

Code:
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll

regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 msxml4.dll (as you said it might not and it did not)

Are these related to the first error posted above?
Thanks, your the man! (or woman! I don't know)

I am not sure you understand what my problem is as you say
"Perform a backup operation to verify that the issue is resolved."
Let me show you in pictures:
When I bring up Backup and Restore, everything looks normal and my F: drive appears as normal:

Then I click on "Manage Space" under my F: drive and about 45-60 secs go by and then this error appears:

Then when I click the OK button on the little error box I get this:

If I click Browse it just displays the contents of my F: drive as normal, but if I click on View Backups I get this picture:

When I click Close to close the dialoge box I get the error again.

So, there you have exactly what I am seeing. It does it's 12 noon backup w/o any errors. It just gets the above errors when I open up Backup and Restore to do anything.

I hope this helps and I do appreciate your help!
Thanks

you need to have administrator privileges and rights. Unless you have disabled UAC (User Access Control), all user accounts except Administrator that you use to login will need user to manually elevate the user rights to administrator credentials although you have set their roles as administrator.

If you try to regsvr32 a module in normal command prompt window without proper administrative privileges, you will get the following error message:

The module “xxx.dll” was loaded but the call to DllregisterServer failed with error code 0×80004005.

what security software are you using?

I could not post until now. I kept getting a timeout.
I have UAC turned completely off as there are me, my wife and my 20 yr old son that use this.

And I did not use an elevated cmd prompt to execute the commands you listed.

Did you see my last post and the fact that the backup runs w/o errors.
Just when I click on something on backup and restore it gets the error.

My virus software is Avira Antivir Personal - Free Antivirus.
My spyware software is SuperAntispyware Professional.
No Firewall.

Thanks for stepping in! What do you want me to do now?

The name of my computer is just 10 char. long and no special chars. except for 2 capital letters.

Here are a couple of recent errors from event viewer:
1) The server {37734C4D-FFA8-4139-9AAC-60FBE55BF3DF} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
2) The Block Level Backup Engine Service service terminated with the following error:
%%-2147024713

(I had just brought up Backup and Restore and clicked on manage space to get an error just prior to this)

Ar these meaningful? If not, tell me more specifically where to look in event manager.
Thanks for your help!!!

Yes, these were red.
The event id for the first one was 10010 and the 2nd one 7023
Thank you!

Forgot to mention that when I click on Backup and Restore, everything looks normal and my F: USB drive is listed.
Although, it says Backup Size: Not Available
When I click on Manage Space, I can feel my F: drive is being read for a while, then about 60 seconds later the error
message pops up.

It just did a backup successfully to my F: drive. It even stated "copying files to F:" when I clicked on View Details.
So I don't get it.

I guess the size was just unavailable while it was doing the backup.
This is what it looks like now:

Thanks!

you might run a check disk on that drive to make sure there is no weirdness

also you could try to rename the F drive itself if the name of that drive was associated with some other weird issue like you had before Windows maybe hung up on that so with renaming unplug it and reconnect it resetup your back up location to F new drive name and see what happens

I'll give it a try.
Thanks

I ran a checkdisk on C: Then I renamed F: - Fantom to Fantasia and shut the PC down and disconnected it. I restarted it, plugged F: back in, reset the backup via Reset_Back_Up_Files registry entry and I still got the error when I attempted to click Setup Backup.

All clean.
When I clicked on Setup Backup.

And yet, when I click on Select another backup to restore files from it shows me the ones that are on the F: drive!

1. Navigate to the following entry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\Status

2. Right click WindowsBackup in the left pane, and click "Export", under Export, and select "Desktop" in the Save in box and type "backup" as the File Name. Click "Save".

Note: If any unexpected issue happens, we can restore the registry key simply by double-clicking the backup.reg file. Once we have completed the troubleshooting and the issue has been resolved we can delete this file.

3. Right click the Status entry in the left pane, and choose delete, and click yes to confirm.
4. Restart your computer and test again.

I do not have a status entry:
I have WindowsBackup and within that I have
1) AutomaticFullbackup
2) OtherParams
3) SystemImageBackup

I have the WindowsBackup registry entry saved on my desktop.
But, not sure what to do since I do not have a Status entry.
Thanks!!!
