I'm in need of a good FLAC converter, seems to be a lot of junk.
The FLAC from SourceForge will not install on my X64 system.

I would give CDEX a try (in the settings you can switch from default Lame engine to the internal FLAC.dll)
If that isn't what you're looking for:
Here is a blog entry which describes in great detail how to set up CDEX (which really is an excellent free ripper) to convert to Flac through an external encoder.

BTW:What's wrong with the FLAC SourceForge version? Installer gets stuck like this:
flacinstallerpc8.jpg

In that case simply unpack the installer with 7zip or Uniextract and copy the files you need manually ;)

what exactly do you want to do?

rip cd's to flac?

convert flac to mp3?

super is pretty simple and lite, and will convert flac to mp3, or try 'cd to flac ripper'.

flac is a great format for ripping cd's, as you lose zero sound quality, unlike mp3's.

(of course, there is no point converting mp3s into flac, you won't gain quality.)

Hi there
this is free and works a treat ( although it says in the title mp3 converter it converts various formats including TO and FROM FLAC fom a number of different codecs.

Koyote Soft

I use this for creating MP3 files when I want to use a portable music player.

For CD ripping directly into FLAC I find WINAMP fine -- and it tags automatically using info from GRACENOTE CDDB so saves effort there too.

I keep my music on the computer in FLAC - I want the original UNCOMPRESSED quality.

Portable pocket sized self powered usb disks as large as 1TB are cheap and readily available.

For re-tagging / re-arranging etc this works a treat too. Also can import tag data directly from online DB's.

Flac Format Question

Hi Jimbo,

I'm from San Diego, California and I have a question 4 you. So you keep your music in FLAC because you want the original UNCOMPRESSED quality. Do you burn CDs? And how do you burn them? I, too, want the original uncompressed quality which is why I download CDs in FLAC format and then convert to WAV and burn CDs. Do you burn CDs in Flac format?

Marsha

If you are wanting to separate the songs with the cue files then what you need is a small, free program named Medieval Cue Splitter (Medieval CUE Splitter (PC)). It is the best.

Please be warned that very often the accompanying cue files are not written properly. In those cases while the MCS can handle these slightly defective files better than other programs there may still be some files that it cannot handle. In that case you have to open these cue files in Notepad/Wordpad to edit them and make them workable.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have to study each. I wan to take flac files, with .cue, create MP3's for my iPod. I have a lot of shows/tracks in flac, that need to be divided into separate tracks

Hello Marsha,

As for your query, presumably you want to make Audio CDs (CDAs) from lossless Flacs and Apes. I do it all the time with a small free program named Burrrn (Burrrn - Download). It is an excellent little program. It can also read the accompanying cue file and split the the work into individual tracks before burning.

Hi there

This is the EASIEST method

1) Rip CD's with Winamp into FLAC -- the advantage of Winamp is that it gets info from gracenote even when playing FLAC directly on the computer.

2) You can re-create the original CD's in their entirety (either as "physical CD's" or as "Virtual CD's") by using NERO with the free mega plugin to burn the Flac format to the standard CDA -- the re-created CD is 100% the same in quality etc etc as the original.

I have one of those smaller 3TB external drives where I just store ALL my CD's now in the original format as virtual ISO's -- Disk space is still relatively cheap (and actually beginning to get cheaper again). This serves as a Music CD archive. The FLAC files I have on line on the computer.

I don't like Ipods so as a music player I use a Sandisk Sansa clip (8GB internal memory, 32GB external with one of those micro SDHC cards --like a mobile phone). This player plays FLAC directly so no mp3 conversion required or needed.

The device only costs around 50 USD too so if it gets broken etc --cheap enough to get another one.

Link for the Nero plugin:

Download Nero Mega Plugin Pack 1.0 Free - A package that will give you more features than the Enterprise Edition - Softpedia

Cheers

"Conversion without quality loss" is obviously a statement which cannot be true, unless the output format is also "lossless" (e.g. WAV, M4A) in which case these would be bit-identical in "quality" to the original FLAC. All other formats you mention are "lossy", which by definition cannot be bit-identical and therefore cannot possibly be talked about as "without quality loss" no matter how good the conversion/quality parameter are in coming from FLAC. Lossy formats "sound pretty good", but a statement like "conversion without quality loss" is simply untrue.

And of course, if your created your FLAC files directly from the original source CD or WAV, then your FLAC files are "bit-perfect lossless duplicates" of the original CD tracks, just physically smaller in size due to the improved compression method of FLAC. But if the source for your FLAC originals was some other non-perfect "lossy" source in the first place (e.g. MP3, which for some reason you converted to FLAC), well hopefully that isn't true.
