BIOS resetting itself

Now I think I have mentioned this before but cannot find where I posted it.

Am running an Asus P8Z77-V with a dual boot in place. Now I don't think the dual boot had got anything to do with it but..... the BIOS will change the boot order just about every time I shut down and power on again and from time to time the SSD is "lost" and I have to load optimised settings to get it back.

All I want is the boot order to stay at what I set it and it is driving me nuts having to constantly go into the BIOS and change it back.

I have looked at numerous Googles but nothing really seems to be of any help.

The battery is new, the drive pugged into the recommended port and the BIOS is the latest version - last time I looked so any ideas please??

Is this the only BIOS related thing acting goofy?

Note I was gonna ask about battery.

Did it do this both before and after the battery change?

Did it do this both before and after the BIOS update?

Have you checked connections - by unplugging and replugging back in cables, etc?

Does the board have a BIOS reset switch on the I/O plate or the board itself? If so, something could be pressing the switch without you knowing it (like a cable).

- Does the boot order change only after electric power on/off, or does the order also change when restarting Windows? What happens if you restart Windows several times, can you reproduce the syptoms here?
- Could try Sleep Mode, an unlikely candidate, but you'd understand the problem better ...

Well to answer all the questions yes it has been happening for a long time and yes it does it after a cold start or reboot the reset switch I have an idea it has one and in that case no I have tried it but I do also have an idea that it just defaults the machine's BIOS or it might be the RAM switch that I am thinking off I shall check it out.

The BIOS update was done just after I built the machine and that was I think was late 2012. It was around the time when the CPU's started to change over a lot as I remeber wishing I had waited for a while until the
i5 4### series was out.

I have to add too that the machine has had a few major issues with it over this time frame and maybe the board is just that bit out of whack but there nothing to be done except strip it out and rebuild I suppose.

see your having fun on the w10 forum.

Any way back to your Bios, a good while back was having fun with a problem on windows updates, turns out the grub was resetting the Bios load order,

Hiyya Roy well mate I have dropped Windows 10 as I just wasn't happy with it and I haven't been on the forum either for a while now as there is no need to hence my dual boots.

Mate this BIOS problem has been there for a long long time well before I was dual booting it is probably something simple but I am no expert with the BIOS settings as a lot of the abbreviations I have to go looking for what they mean so am stuck with it I guess.

Some software can cause this.

I installed some Nielson software which randomly causes BSODs.
The BSODs only started occurring after I installed this software (it installs a driver which I believe is responsible for the weird behaviour).
My SSD vanishes from the BIOS when this happens.

I have to power my PC off (at the power supply) and then "drain" the motherboard by holding the case power switch on (or leave it powered off for a couple of minutes).

Once I've done this my PC boots normally.

Ok mate I'll give that a try tonight as I always power off every night as I don't like leaving machines running when I am not close by.

Now as for software I suppose it could be anything with me but I only use the usual ones like Partition Wizard and Macrium etc. However I do remember once a long time ago now I had to uninstall the Samsung Magician software as it used to make my USB ports malfunction if at all. But I have not run that software since do you reckon it could have corrupted the BIOS??

IIRC, people were having issues with that software and Fast Boot in W10.

I don't know if it could be responsible for your issue.

I remember being horrified when I first found out that you could rewrite your BIOS from inside Windows.
I don't understand why all malware doesn't use that function to rootkit PCs.

Does your BIOS have a "Reset to Default" option?

John, when you boot, during POST, enter BIOS to see if the clock is right. If it is wrong, change the CMOS battery (CR2032).

Ok Peter mate I will take fast boot out of the equation as I have it set to that I'll use normal boot and yes apart from clocking the RAM I am using the Optimised setting.

Mega ok mate I will check but I am pretty sure the date etc is fine and I am sure the battery is not that old it has me wondering now because I remember changing a battery not that long ago but it could have been on the other desktop you now have me wondering which it was. .
