Black screen after boot and other problems

Hello... I already have Windows XP installed and would like to install Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on another hard drive (multi/dual-boot). The installation went over smoothly. When finished, the computer rebooted automatically and it tried to log into W7, but I got a black screen before anything appeared. Multiple restarts did the same thing.
When I opened Windows XP to search about the problem, the performance was reduced and when trying to access the other drive via My Computer, the second HDD was still there, but the window froze. Then I tried to repair Windows using the disk, but it seemed that Windows did not install properly and it didn't detect my hard drive when I tried to install Windows again. I also cannot go into Safe Mode. I think my hard drive is "borked". How should I proceed?

Hello and welcome akoz mate did you have both drives hooked up when you tried the install of 7?

Plus how have you got the BIOS set to boot from? if you go into the BIOS and go to the boot section and make the 7 hard drive as the first boot drive. Personally I would just leave the 7 running and if you are just keeping XP for data I would be getting that off of there and onto the 7 afer I had booted into 7 and then hooked up that other drive if it will take it.

You realise XP is not supported from early next year so it seems a lot of trouble to go to just to eep it running for a small time only.

Plus I see you only have 2GB RAM there mate for 7 that is really pushing your luck especially Ultimate. Did you really need Ultimate?
Anyway some system specs would be good too.
