Do your CDs sound better if played on a DVD drive VS a CD drive?
It's the same thing. Its just a reader that reads the disc. The original quality will always be the same as the source its reading from. It does not change it in any way.
Quality diffrences will be made on the software side.
For example if you watch the DVD in Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime, and Power DVD ... all 3 may look slightly diffrent.
This is because of how they each decode the Video and Audio stream coming from the reader to play back.
It is not the drive itself that does it.
Now as far as Bluray goes, yes. It will look a LOT better.
This is simply because the source itself on the disc is much higher quality.
A DVD for example is 720pixels wide by 480pixels tall. Your software player will decode this and either stretch it to fit your display, or upscale it to your display resolution.
BluRay on the other hand is 1920pixels wide and 1080pixels high.
A Bluray player will be able to recognize and read from any CD,DVD, or Bluray disc.
However, to actually playback and watch a Bluray disc movie, you need 2 things.
1) A reader, the Bluray drive itself.
2) Bluray playback software. (such as PowerDVD, Nero, WinDVD)
Sometimes this is included with the reader, other times its a seprate purchase.
Bottom line, if you are wanting to purchase a BluRay drive for the sole purpose of making DVD video look better. Don't. It will not help.
If you are wanting to start moving over to BluRay from DVD, then it does offer much better picture quality and may be worth the investment for many.
