Hi there, I apologise that this problem isn't windows 7 related, but I can't seem to find much help elsewhere.

  • Opened up pc to blow away dust
  • Turned on pc to test faulty fan
  • Turned off pc, closed and setup like normal
  • Turned on, recieved error message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device. or insert boot media in selected boot device"
  • Boot order was: CD drive > Removable disk > HDD
  • Tried plugging in usb external hard drive I sometimes have when I start up in case it was looking for it.
  • On startup, no error message, just black screen with unresponsive, flashing underscore
  • Boot order changed itself to: CD drive > Removable disk > usb external HD
I assume this error has something to do with my hard drive (which is relatively new) as it now isnt being detected. The only thing I did was lightly blow the dust off it once.

I can't find any solutions so far, but I very much appreciate any help!
Thank you.

"Reboot and select proper boot device. or insert boot media in selected boot device"

That message usually appears if there is no hard drive connected to the computer.
Things to check:

  • Reset/check the boot order: CD > Removable > HDD
  • Check to be sure the SATA data cable is completely attached to the hard drive and the mother board socket.
  • Check to be sure that the SATA power connector from the power supply is completely connected.
  • Enter your BIOS and look to see if the HDD is showing up on the first tab.
  • Test it with the boot order with the HDD as the first device.
  • Listen to the drive (a short piece of hose is good for this) to see if you can hear it spinning.

Use normal static protection while fiddling around inside the case - touch the metal frame of the case before touching any components. (Don't do this work in fuzzy socks on carpeted floors, etc, etc.)

Post back on what you find.

Thanks TVeblen! I checked the connections and it turned out the sata cable was slightly disconnected. Such an obvious problem but if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have checked!
Thanks again man!

Glad to be of help.
Gotta love it when it's easy!
