Boot problems from POST screen onwards

A few days ago, until I tried - and failed - to fix my laptop with a recovery disc, my laptop was gradually running Windows 7 more and more slowly. The system would then result to slowing down at the "Starting Windows" boot screen, and as of today the operating system is refusing to reinstall itself and the POST screen is incredibly slow, too.

Even whenever I try to boot CDs it takes a while to get them working properly, and I'm having trouble trying to identify the source of the problem (I did a Memtest86 on an Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD and it passed the test).

I'm starting to think that the problem could be hardware-related. A little help, please?

(I'd also better say that I deleted some software a couple of boots before the system started playing up, and cleaned the system with CCleaner in the session before the laptop wouldn't work properly)
