Although the following articles were written for XP, the same principles apply to the Vista and Win7 registry(s):

XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry Cleaners
Mark's Blog : Registry Junk: A Windows Fact of Life

Quoted for truth. Registry cleaners are a waste of time.

You know what else is a waste of time? Network "tweakers". The only "tweaks" that work for a modern OS's networking... are turning off unneeded features, or incompatible ones. Fiddling with the MTU, receive windows, stack sizes, and all that garbage doesn't ever fix ANYTHING with a modern OS. Vista introduced some features that were bad, it's well documented how to disable them.

People go on and on about service tweaking too. It's a waste.

Lol I wish I had known this ahead of time because my computer crashed with a BSOD last night from the same program. First time deciding to do a registry defrag because Auslogics said it would increase my performance by 23% so I did it. Well after it rebooted it BS'd. I couldn't even load into safe mode or last known good configuration. System Restore wouldn't even load. And when I tried to press F11 to start system recovery at the first screen nothing would happen. Thank goodness I happened to have a recovery disk I made with vista back when I first got the PC. Saved me a trip and the money of going to a computer repair store :).

Though all of my data was reformatted. At least I can start fresh xD

But 60 gigs of music, 20 gigs of videos, tons of pictures, and semii-valuable documents wiped in the process.
